6 Editorial with Frances Niblock THE NEW TANNER THURSDAY, MAY 5, 2011 The voters spoke It must be tough enough to lose an election campaign, but even harder to take for Green Party candidate Brent Bouteiller and his supporters who staged a serious election campaign to be badly beaten by a phantom in Wellington-Halton Hills. The NDP candidate, Anastasia Zavarella, did not put up any signs, attend all-candidates meetings, contact local media, or apparently meet many voters, yet she still garnered 7,151 votes that's 13 per cent of the votes cast. Those numbers must also give pause to the Liberal candidate, Barry Peters, who also staged a serious campaign, and yet only received 1,883 more votes than the NDP candidate who phoned it in. The voters have spoken, but what is the message? Asked about the votes for a no-show candidate, MP Michael Chong, who took 63.7 per cent of the vote in a near coronation, said he had to "respect the voters." Reader concerned there may be cracks in quarry expansion plan Dear Editor, When I was at my computer in Acton, one January afternoon around 3 p.m. the room began to shake and I heard a low rumble. I thought immediately of the earthquake felt in Acton last year! I called Environment Canada to report the quake. A few hours later, I was informed it was not an earthquake but a quarry blast. What a surprise! Never did I dream a blast from the Dufferin Quarry, south of Town, would be felt at my home in northwest Acton! It made me wonder if the cracks in my home, built in the 50's, were a result of these tremors. The proposed Dufferin Quarry expansion moving closer to Town concerns me! Have homes in Acton been constructed to withstand the effects of blasting nearby? C.
