THURSDAY, MAY 19, 2011 THE NEW TANNER Nassagaweya church celebrates 175 years Before there was even a dedicated building, the early residents who formed a congregation for Nassagaweya Presbyterian Church gathered at Hutcheon's Hill or Knowles schoolhouse, with travelling student or supply ministers to cater to their Christian needs. The earliest record for a service, dated May 17, 1839, noted that the sermon was conducted in Gaelic and English for 41 attendees, was held over four days, and may have been to consecrate the new frame building. The current stone church with its deep windows, balcony, and tinted glass windows was erected in 1861 on the same site, and has been welcoming its parishioners and visitors since that time. Sunday School/meeting space was added in 1908, along with numerous upgrades throughout the following century. Nassagaweya Presbyterian was recognized as a heritage building in 2004. To celebrate NPC's 175th anniversary several exciting events will take place, beginning with an evening concert featuring Glen Soderholm on Friday, May 27 at 8 p.m. Glen is a Guelph resident who served NPC as pastor and then as senior pastor from 1991 to 2004. His extraordinary singing and songwriting offers introspective views on life and spirituality. Several celebrations continue in June: On Saturday the 4th, the annual community chicken barbecue runs from 4:30 to 7 p.m. The menu includes fresh barbequed chicken, vegetables, roll, beverage and pie. The next morning is the muchanticipated 175th Anniversary Service at 10 a.m., with guest speaker Rev. Harold Percy, an accomplished author, speaker, and pastor who is now at Wycliffe College. A light lunch will follow the service. For further information visit www. nassagaweya.com, email info@nassagaweya.com or call 905-854-1055.
