2 THE NEW TANNER 65 per cent failure rate in Child Safety Seat Blitz THURSDAY, MAY 19, 2011 On Saturday, May 14, the Halton Regional Police Service in conjunction with Halton Partners for Car Seat Safety, conducted a car seat enforcement blitz at the Churchill Road fire station. Eighty occupied child safety seats were assessed for minimum compliance with Ontario Law. The Police "Quick Check" is a screening of child safety seats for the most common errors in use and installation only, and does not ensure that you have installed the child's seat correctly. The quick check identified children at undue risk of injury or death quickly, while minimizing inconvenience to motorists who have followed both their vehicle and child safety seat manuals to ensure the child is properly secured. Of the 80 seats, 51 showed at least one major error in use or installation, including: · Infant Only (Rear Facing), seven of eight failed = 88 per cent · Infant/Child (Rear to Forward Facing), 22 of 29 failed = 76 per cent · 3 in 1 (Rear/Forward/Booster), eight of 10 failed = 80 per cent · Child Booster (Forward/Booster), 13 of 30 failed = 43 per cent · Booster Only, one of three failed = 33 per cent · Excluding booster only seats, an overall failure rate of 65 per cent was observed. The Halton Partners for Car Seat Safety had qualified car seat technicians on site to educate and assist drivers in remedying seat installation and use errors. The goal of the day was to ensure that all children through the checkpoint could leave properly secured, and with a reduced likelihood of injury or death should they later be involved in a collision. Community partners provided a total of 56 full inspections and re-installations. The Halton Partners for Car Seat Safety donated seven new seats so that children could leave the clinic safely.
