THURSDAY, MAY 19, 2011 Halton students take aim at bullying The Halton District School Board, Halton Catholic District School Board and the Halton Regional Police Service, recognize the profound impact and long term effects bullying can have on our youth, their families and friends. With this in mind, both School Boards and police united to develop a bullying awareness and prevention campaign that was initiated in November 2010. In February 2011, youth from across the region were challenged to play a major role in the reduction of bullying in their schools and everyday lives. Students were challenged to develop a message to address bullying as part of a friendly school competition using various mediums supported by technical studies, dramatic arts and fine arts. Each school was responsible for selecting its final submissions which were turned over to a judging panel made up of mainly youth from the community, supported by members of the School Boards and the Halton Regional Police Service. The top four finalists will be announced at a gala event which is scheduled to take place on May 17 at St. Volodymyr's Cultural Centre in Oakville. The members of the media are invited to attend in order to see the important anti-bullying awareness messages that the talented students of Halton Region have produced. THE NEW TANNER 3 Town Digest Expansion at St. Joe's Two classrooms and a classroom alteration/ expansion have been approved for Acton's St. Joseph Catholic School by trustees with the Halton Catholic District School Board (HCDSB.) The additions budgeted at $900,000 will accommodate Kindergarten and primary classes. The two-classroom additions will be built at a west end or at the rear of the school, and a classroom adjacent to the existing two Kindergarten rooms will be built to accommodate all-day Kindergarten classes, which begin this fall. "We hope we'll have building permits soon," said facilities superintendent Giacomo Corbacia on Tuesday, adding the Kindergarten expansion must be ready by September 1, and the two classrooms, hopefully at the same time or a bit later. "We are providing three fully-equipped Kindergarten rooms and we're also adding two additional rooms in the school one to replace the classroom we're losing that will be converted into a Kindergarten," he said, adding if all of the rooms are ready this fall, the portables now on site will not be needed. Burlington Cup winners Congrats to Halton Hills staff who, for the fourth year in a row, won the Burlington Cup and first place honours from the Canadian Lifesaving Society. The award honours the Town for having the largest lifesaving program for municipalities with populations between 50,000 and 100,000. The Cup is awarded based on the number of lifesaving certifications issued by the Town. Last year, The Town certified over 2,000 people in a variety of lifesaving courses particularly noteworthy because Halton Hills earned more points than larger municipalities. "These accomplishments are significant for the Town and strongly indicate our commitment to drowning prevention and advanced lifesaving programs..." said Mayor Rick Bonnette. As well, Margaret Taylor, the Town's recreation Co-ordinator, was recently recognized by the Parks and Recreation Ontario Provincial Forum for her 10 years of dedicated service as a HIGH FIVE trainer. High Five is a provincial program that ensures quality and healthy development of children through recreation and sports programs. Two per cent raise for Town Non-union staff working for Halton Hills will get a two per cent wage increase this year as detailed in recently approved changes to the Town's personnel policy manual. The two percent salary hike for non-union staff is retroactive to January 1 this year, and matches wage increases for non-union staff in neighbouring municipalities. As well, council members will continue to get benefits until they are 70, and the new mileage rate is 51 cents per kilometre, up from 49 cents, an additional cost of $7,000 to the Town that will be covered by the existing budget.
