THURSDAY, MAY 19, 2011 THE NEW TANNER 5 The Centre will be closed on Monday, May 23 for the Victoria Day Holiday. On Tuesday, June 7 from 1 to 4 p.m. North Halton Injury Prevention will be holding a safe driving workshop. The objective of this workshop is to give you the most up to date information about advanced driving techniques, current legislation and how it all directly impacts you the drivers of 70 years of age and up. I understand there will be a stimulator used during the presentation. You must pre register for this workshop. There is a note on the board from Florence letting us know that in future if you wish to join them on a Day Tripper trip run out of the Georgetown Centre, she can arrange for you to be picked up in Acton. That will make things a lot more convenient. Twenty-five members who were born in either April or May celebrated their birthdays with their guests at the Acton Seniors Centre last Tuesday. The Mother's Day social dinner on Thursday evening was a great success. Seventy-five members and guests enjoyed the dinner and entertainment. There were nineteen lucky winners who received either orchid plants, or flowers. The 50/50 was won by Joyce Marrows. The trio Abbey's Meltdown played dinner music during dinner followed by great music for dancing. They had everyone up dancing or tapping their toes to the music. The next dinner will be on Thursday June 30 when the board will be serving, so the regular crew can enjoy their evening. Maple Lodge will barbecue their famous chicken, and back by popular demand, Juke Box will provide the music. Ruth Burke and Elma Braida had the only mooners at Thursday afternoons Bid Euchre. Now the Spring Bazaar is behind us, we are looking forward to our next major fundraiser. The final figures are not in yet but it looks as if we raised around $2,500. We will be holding a G.S.T Auction in September. We held one several years ago, and it was a lot of fun. "G" means goods, "S" services, and "T" talents which could be as simple as offering to walk a dog for a week, or cook a meal for several people TIGER TALES: Sheila Jeffery (left) and Lorrie Ryan Lewis (right) hold a mother and baby tiger that were looking for a good home at the Acton Seniors Bazaar held on May 7. - Julie Conroy photo or bake a cake for a special occasion. It seems we are always trying to raise funds, but the everyday running expenses of the Centre are considerable. If you would like to contribute or help in any way, please call 519-853-5951 and leave your name and phone number and someone will get back to you. On Tuesday, May 31 at 2 p.m., the Acton Seniors Centre are hosting a very informative seminar offering practical solutions for seniors living alone and worrying about health problems, safety issues and making ends meet. There will be a team of local professionals here, prepared to help you with a smooth transition into the next phase of your senior years. It is open to the general public and the magic word, refreshments will be served. Calling all golfers!
