THURSDAY, MAY 26, 2011 On May 17, Halton Hills Firefighter Kevin Usher was at the Centre and gave a very informative presentation impressing on every one how important it is to be ready for any emergency or disaster. We think of disasters as being floods, and tornados. He reminded us that we have two major transportation roads running through Acton, plus the railway. He recommended everyone have an emergency kit THE NEW TANNER 19 ies (stored separately in the container), canned food, can opener, candles, lighter, a hand cranked radio or battery radio is also a good idea. With the electronic age, twitter, Facebook and cell phones are invaluable making contacting people much easier. He also mentioned if you have pets, include them in your emergency plan and information on all medication you might take on a regular basis. In case of an emergency the Acton Community Centre is Acton's designated relief centre. He said it is surprising how frequently people do not have working smoke detectors in their homes. Did you know you should vacuum yours once a year? He also recommended an emergency kit in your car. You never know when you might need it. The Acton Seniors Centre would like to thank everyone who saved and donated the plastic tags from the milk and bread. The group that was collecting them told Betty Green they were able to obtain a wheelchair from the tags, but they have now stopped collecting them. If you know of any group that is collecting them please give the front desk a call, and we will carry on saving them. If there is no response, we will have to stop. It is amazing how quickly the little tags add up to fill the coffee containers. We will be having a movie marathon starting on Tuesday, May 31 at 10 a.m. with Meet the Fockers followed two weeks later (June 14 at 1 p.m.) by Little Fockers. Michelle says "bring your Kleenex as you will laugh until you cry!" Plan on watching the movie, bring lunch and stay for the informative Seminar Rightsizing for Seniors starting at 2 p.m. Last Thursday, at Bid Euchre, Ruth Burke had the first mooner, followed by Elma Braida. Incredible as it may seem, the 50/50 was not won again this week, so the amount next Friday should be around $865. I noticed several people coming in at the last minute this week. Please try and get to the Centre before 3:45 p.m. as it takes a while to balance the cash and put things away ready for 4 p.m. close. available that would be good for 72 hours, and would included items such as water, flashlights with batter- ARE YOU PREPARED? Halton Hills Firefight Kevin Usher handed out information on what should be in a 72-hour emergency kit when he visited the Acton Seniors Centre last week. Glad for the information were, from right: Centre President Bev Jones, Sienna Ancker and Connie Crawford. Julie Conroy photo Acton Idol Saturday, June 18 - 4:00 p.m. Prospect Park th TRUNK SALE As always, BARGAIN HUNTERS ARE FREE c A n to SA EVE ST TU RY A R M RT DAY AY IN 28 G Registration forms available at: Roxy Coffee, Acton BIA Office & www.downtownacton.ca Vendors $10 Admission Gates Open at 7:30 a.m. 2 Categories: · 14 & under · 15 & up This is part of the Random Acts of Kindness Week in conjunction with the Big Daddy Festival. 5 finalists will be chosen and move on to the final round on Canada Day Concert In The Park.
