THURSDAY, MAY 26, 2011 Town honours residents' achievements An Acton soccer booster, a National baton twirler, a Canadian champion figure skater and at least three Acton area residents were among those honoured by the Town on Tuesday at a Municipal Awards ceremony. For more than 30 years, the Town has recognised individuals, groups and teams that brought hon our to Halton Hills through their achievements in educational, culture, sports and recreational pursuits. Acton's Pat Graham received an Achievement Award for exceptional leadership and devotion to his community for his founding work with the Acton Soccer Club over the last 36 years volunteering his time as a coach, referee, fundraiser and executive member. Graham began coach ing his five-year-old son in 1976, and worked his way up to head referee for 20 years. In addition, he organized courses, monitored and trained many referees, and contributed countless hours to the Club's bingo fundraising initiatives, raising $150,000 which the Club gave the Town for sports field lights at the Acton Sports Park. In 2001, Graham re ceived an Ontario Volunteer Service Award for over twenty-five years of volunteer service, and two years ago, he was inducted into the Halton Hills Sports Museum Hall of Fame. Rural Acton resident, figure skater Hayleigh Bell was honoured for her Gold medal skate with her partner representing Team Ontario at the Canada Winter Games in Halifax. Last season, Bell and her partner won the short and long program of every competition they entered, including the Central Ontario Pre-Novice Pairs, and Western/Eastern Challenge where they claimed the Pre-Novice Canadian Championship. As a singles skater, Bell garnered a Silver medal competing against 89 PreNovice Ladies, and was named to Team Elite, which placed third overall. Acton's Audra Jander is Pre-Teen Novice Miss Majorette of Canada. The award is a combination of three events modelling and interview, marching, and solo. Jander competes in team categories baton, pom-pom and danceline and several individ ual events solo, strut, solo-dance, marching and two-baton. The Fourth Line resident is a Grade six student at St. Francis of Assisi School where she is a member of the Me-to-We organization, the track and field team and PROPS (peers running organized play stations) program. Also receiving awards were: · Members of Centre Stage School of Arts which launched "Beyond the Stage" to its teachers, students and parent volunteers to mobilise the dance studio "family" and give back to the community. Raising awareness and preparing for a showcase event, dancers and parents visited local schools weekly to hold dance training sessions for underprivileged youth. The inaugural "Beyond the Stage" event raised over $10,000 for KidsFest, a non-profit organization that bridges the gap between the haves and the have-nots. · Members of the CheerForce Jaguars, Senior, Junior and Youth Teams including Acton's Desiray Ebbinge, Jaidyn Pond and Meghan Woodyatt who dominated provincial competitions last season. The Senior team earned the Cheer Evolution Provincial Championships. The Junior Team was named Provincial Champions for the Large Junior Level 2 Div ision, and the Youth Team placed second at the Provincial Championship. Recently, the Senior Team's Gold medal performance earned the National Title. Before inviting the awardees and their proud supporters who jammed the Council Chambers to a reception, Mayor Rick Bonnette thanked them for their dedication and support. "...Your commit ment is commendable and the representation of our community is truly admirable." Residents are now diverting 60 per cent of residential waste away from the landfill, increasing its life from 2023 to 2032! The landfill is a valuable resource for Halton Region and is an investment worth protecting. Building upon the success of its Blue Box and GreenCart programs, Halton Region is exploring ways to further increase residential waste diversion to 65 and even 70 per cent! In consultation with the Joint Municipal Regional Waste Management Committee--a citizen's advisory committee--Halton Region has developed a Draft Solid Waste Management Strategy. The Draft Solid Waste Management Strategy identifies potential initiatives that could be implemented to achieve these higher waste diversion goals.
