THURSDAY, MAY 26, 2011 Two Acton churches help MSB with Breakfast Club kitchen The 300 McKenzieSmith Bennett students who start at least two school days a week with a brain-building breakfast will benefit from a new stove in the Breakfast Club's developing kitchen in a former sports storage area. The new stove, kitchen cupboards and shelving were made possible by fundraising efforts of Acton Baptist Church and Bethel Church which staged two performances of Dinner With a Perfect Stranger last month, raising $600, which was matched by an anonymous donor. Part of the Halton Food for Thought program, the MSB Breakfast Club's 20 adult and 15 student volunteers prepare and serve breakfast on Tuesday and Thursday before school everything from pancakes to pitas with cream cheese, pizza and the ever-popular smoothies all meeting Canadian food guidelines. The Breakfast Club is much more than just good food, according to co-ordinator Corrie Bouzalas who was on hand on Tuesday to gratefully accept a $1,200 cheque from the churches. "Its all about sharing and caring and meeting and communication and manners," Bouzalas said, adding the Breakfast Club is in its fifth year, thanks to the generous church donations and community support. Principle Sharon French said along with a good breakfast, students get a chance to talk about volunteering, socializing, learning about food preparation and serving people. She said "lots" of kids come to school without a good breakfast, adding the MSB Breakfast Club is the largest of its kind in Halton elementary schools. Diane Leferink said Bethel supports the Breakfast Club because, "we give from who were are." "Serving in the community is an important part of being involved with churches in Acton," she said, adding they are "walking the talk." THE NEW TANNER 5 Within weeks, there will be painting party at the Breakfast Club. The cupboards and shelving will be installed as the proper kitchen is set up in a former sports equipment room.
