THURSDAY, MAY 26, 2011 THE NEW TANNER 7 GRAPEVINE Top Techs Congrats, again, to senior Tech Design students at Acton High School whose hard work earned them an Our Canada Award from Halton Region and the Halton Region Museum last week. Each year the Award sponsors celebrate Kindergarten to Grade 12 students' impressions of Canada's history, geography and culture. The Acton team's entry tackled the issue of a lack of affordable housing in Halton and came up with a development design methods that are efficient, environmentally friendly and easily incorporated in new house construction. *** Based on his wins at the school, region and provincial tech competitions, Acton High's top tech ­ Grade 11 student Jon Van Oosten ­ advances to the National Skills Competition in Quebec City on Monday. He faces a daunting 12-hour Architectural Design and Drafting challenge against the best tech students Canada has to offer. ALS walk The third annual Acton/ Georgetown Walk for ALS takes place June 4 at the Gellert Community Centre in Georgetown South. Members of "Poppa's Posse" ­ family and friends of the late Don Lindsay of Acton - will participate in the walk to raise money for ALS. Registration begins at 9 a.m., with the opening ceremonies slated for 10:45. There will be an early bird registration on Sunday (May 29) from 1 to 3 p.m. in the community room at the Georgetown Superstore. Ducks dive The Acton Aqua Ducks stage its annual Mini-Swim Meet tomorrow (Friday) from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Acton Indoor Pool. Swimmers aged five to 17 will take to the pool, cheered on by their parents and team mates. FoodShare open house Ever wonder how Acton's FoodShare food bank feeds so man hungry people? You can get a look at the behind the scenes working of the food bank on May 31 during an open house to mark Hunger Awareness Day. The theme this year is "Make a Change, Make a Difference" and FoodShare officials encourage Acton and area residents to change what they know about hunger, change how they support food banks and change how they talk about hunger. The open house runs from 1 to 4 p.m. Festival fun Want to be part of an Acton summer tradition? The Leathertown Festival committee is looking for volunteers to help with this year's event on Sunday, August 7. For details call the Acton BIA office at 519-853-9555. Church fundraiser A bake sale, indoor garage sale and a car wash are on tap on Saturday, June 4 at St. Alban Anglican Church's bargain bazaar. Proceeds will benefit the Primate World Relief and Development Fund. The sale runs from 8:30 to 1 p.m. Limehouse church anniversary Congregants and guests will celebrate the 150th anniversary of Limehouse Presbyterian Church on Sunday with a Memorial Day service and dedication of a bench in the cemetery by Acton's Jean Somerville, in honour of her ancestors who helped build the church. The cemetery is 185 years old. A step that will change the world as you know it. To lighten the burden of any cancer journey, Cancer Assistance Services of Halton Hills is here to help make that step less worrisome. Our April campaign generates a large portion of our budgeted revenue. We are pleased that the response to this appeal for funds has been supported generously. The campaign generated $90,995 for 2011. Special thanks to Acton residents for their generous donations to our April campaign, and we are grateful for the generous sharing of funds from the Paul Muir Memorial Golf Tournament. Dear Editor: On behalf of the Acton Branch of the Canadian Cancer Society I would like to thank all those people who supported our fundraising events during the month of April. We began the month selling our beautiful fresh daffodils and our new daffodil pins, then we canvassed door to door and ended with the "Dance for the Cure" event featuring the live music of the Boomerangs. We would like to thank the Boomerangs for providing their wonderful music ­ everyone who attended had a great time. Thanks also to Dominos Pizza, the Royal Canadian Legion ­ Acton Branch and Tim Horton's and to the Georgetown Independent and Free Press and The New Tanner for their coverage of all our events.
