THURSDAY, JUNE 16, 2011 THE NEW TANNER FESTIVE WELCOME Gloria (left) and John Wilson were welcomed with open arms during their recent trip to Papua, Indonesia to help celebrate 50 years since the arrival of the gospel. Submitted photo From a World Away John and Gloria Wilson, members of Acton Baptist Church, are home after a month spent a world away in the highlands of Papua, Indonesia. Along with the first missionary, 85-year-old Bruno de Leeuw from Alberta, they were guests of the national church as they celebrated 50 years since the arrival of the gospel in Yahukimo region. On their arrival, the Wilson's and their three adult sons were welcomed by members of the Yali tribe dressed in their finery and singing a song specially composed for the occasion. Then, they were made to walk between ranks of singing women, who took off their multi-coloured dress net bags which they laid down on the pathway in front of them. Since these net bags were traditionally worn by women as a sign of their modesty, this was a display of great honour and respect, In addition to other special events, there was one full week of festivity with joyful open-air meetings, where thousands sang traditional hymns; seminars inside a large church packed to the doors with 600 to 700 people, evening youth concerts with lively and rhythmic singing 5 Crime Stopper award Halton Crime Stoppers board member Kelly Gorven has been named Civilian Crime Stopper of the Year by the Ontario Association of Crime Stoppers, one of three awards presented to Halton Crime Stoppers at the annual Crime Stoppers Provincial Training Conference held earlier this month in Sarnia. Halton's program was also honored for having the best newsletter and recognized for having the best Special Project to combat crime in the community. Kelly, who joined Halton's Crime Stoppers program in 2007 at the age of 18, currently serves as secretary of the board and is also responsible for producing the program's newsletter. "It was a double win for Kelly," said Sergeant Gary Gold, Halton's Coordinator. "She not only received the Civilian Achievement Award but was also recognized for the commitment she makes to prepare our newsletter." The members of Halton's Crime Stoppers board unanimously nominated Gorven for the top provincial award in recognition of the work she has done for Crime Stoppers since joining the board. Her interest began when she was assigned to prepare a story on Crime Stoppers for the Sheridan College newspaper while enrolled in the Journalism Print program. Even before graduating, Gorven volunteered to become a board member to provide a youth perspective to the program, which takes anonymous tips on unsolved crime throughout Halton. "She has been an active volunteer since joining the board and has participated on a number of projects," said board chair Cal Millar. "Kelly also gave insight from her perspective that added a new vision to the student program operating in high schools and community college facilities across the region." Being a Journalism Print graduate, Kelly took the reigns of the newsletter and brought it to a new level with an eye-catching design and intricate use of color and photography. "She had definitely made a contribution to our program since becoming a board member," Millar said. Members of Halton's Crime Stoppers program are also extremely pleased to have been recognized with a Special Project Award, acknowledging an initiative in partnership with the Halton Regional Police Guns and Gangs Unit to take preventative measures before gang violence spreads from larger communities to schools in Halton. The program developed by Halton Crime Stoppers introduced a specially designed poster which indicated gangs and guns are not welcome in the community, and appealing for tips from anyone who has information about gun and gang related activity. The campaign was kicked off in conjunction with January as Crime Stoppers Month, and the posters were displayed in all high schools across the region as well as on transit vehicles and in various other public buildings throughout Halton. of traditional and modern Christian songs, and, finally, an immense, traditional, pit-cooked feast featuring 400 pigs. The climax of the main week of festivities was the dedication of a monument. Church leaders and Christian representatives of tribal leadership and local government acknowledged God's grace and blessing in their lives through Jesus Christ, since the coming of the gospel 50 years ago, and led the people in an act of commitment to continue to live faithfully "under the authority of the Lord God." Police notify public about crop spraying Halton Police have been notified of scheduled crop spraying within the Region over the next couple days.
