8 Independent & Free Press,Friday, January 1, 2010 New CrossWheels service aids seniors in making medical appointments Halton Hills seniors will have an easier way to get to medical appointments in Mississauga and Halton after a new service starts in January. The Canadian Red Cross has teamed up with Peel Victorian Order Of Nurses (VON) and ESS Support Services, to develop a streamlined call system to improve service delivery for seniors and others who use these organizations for transportation. The program will be launched in early 2010, and will be serving residents in Georgetown, Acton, Milton, Oakville, Mississauga, and southwest Etobicoke. A new toll-free number serving all of the organizations will be created to support the partnership. This intake hub, titled CrossWheels, will be managed by the Canadian Red Cross and will enable clients to call one number to schedule their ride. The Red Cross will then schedule rides with the most appropriate provider. "For the past few years, we have seen an increase in the need for transportation services in the area," said Angelo Martini, transportation manager with the Canadian Red Cross. "With a partnership approach, we can ensure the most effective service delivery and a simplified process for our clients." Elderly, frail, and ill members of the community can use the service to schedule rides to and from medical appointments, adult day programs, dialysis, rehabilitation programs and shopping. The service is for individuals unable to access existing transportation due to accessibility options. The Canadian Red Cross, along with its community partners, Peel VON and ESS Support Services are also searching for volunteers to assist with its transportation programs. Volunteers help to drive clients to and from appointments. Individuals available during the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. are especially needed. "Our transportation programs are successful because of the dedication and support of our volunteers," said Martini. "We need volunteers to ensure that this program can continue to help those in need in our communities for many years to come." Photo by Ted Brown Town okays repair work for abandoned building Town Council gave staff the go-ahead at the December meeting to do repairs on a building at 108 Mill St., across from the Legion. The absentee property owner had been issued a Property Standard Order in June, but despite searches, staff could not find the property owner until August. The work would cost about $20,000 to $23,000, which will be collected as a priority lien. The property taxes--$20,500-- for the building are already two years in arrears. The Town will hire a contractor to repair the roof, eavestroughs, soffits and covering of the windows. Staff are concerned about safety hazards to pedestrians. Mayor Rick Bonnette was worried the Town was putting $23,000 into a building that could eventually become a teardown. Councillor Jane Fogal, a member of the Georgetown BIA, said the building is a concern to the BIA for a number of reasons "not the least of which is shingles flying off it."
