10 Independent & Free Press,Friday, January 1, 2010 Van de Valk named Intercounty Twins' manager By GARY McCARTHY Metroland Media Group The Mississauga Twins have hired a new field manager for the 2010 Intercounty Baseball League season. The Twins announced last week that Georgetown native Scott Van de Valk will take over the club for next season, replacing interim manager Ian Held. "We are very impressed with Scott's baseball and coaching pedigree," said Twins' general manager Doug Kelcher. "We are excited about the skills he brings to the table and we look forward to a breakout sophomore season." Van de Valk has an extensive coaching and training background in baseball as well as hockey and will be a positive addition to the Twins, added Kelcher. Van de Valk was commissioner of the junior Intercounty Baseball League for two seasons and he also served as a coach for the Georgetown Eagles' underSCOTT 15 program that won a CaVAN DE VALK nadian AAA championship in August. As well, he was co-coach of the Van de Guelph Silvercreeks' squad that hosted and won the Canadian junior championship in 2006. "Sports, baseball specifically, has long been a passion of mine," the Christ the King Secondary School teacher said. "After meeting with Doug, I knew the Twins' position would be a good fit. With a young nucleus of players, we are excited about the team's potential in 2010," he added. Valk will immediately start the recruiting process and is likely to begin an indoor training program shortly after the new year. The Twins finished with a 9-27 record last season, their first in the IBL, and ended up in seventh place in the nine-team league. They were eliminated by the Brantford Red Sox in the first round of the playoffs. The Red Sox went on to capture the IBL championship for the second time in the last three years. The Twins started last year with Adeo Calcagni as the field manager, but he was replaced by Held in the latter part of the season. The Raiders were edged 5-3 in this contest and despite winning their next two games- 6-1 over the Oshawa Minor Generals and 5-1 against the Agincourt CanadiensGeorgetown's minor bantam AEs didn't advance to the playoff round with their 2-2-0 record.
