18 Independent & Free Press,Friday, January 1, 2010 Robot rookies Stewarttown Middle School sent two teams to compete in the First Lego League competition for Halton and Peel. The competition was at Mentor College where the students showcased their talents in three areas-- computer programming and building, teamwork, and innovative presentations. The teams were required to build and program a Lego robot and complete a series of missions in 2 1/2 minutes. They had to complete a teamwork challenge and explain their program and building rationale. They also conducted two research projects about transportation issues (the local GO train and drug trafficking) and presented their findings. The two groups (The Stingers and the Snakes) faced off against 24 teams from Halton and Peel and placed 15th and 16th in the programming and building category. They also took home The Rookie of the Year award and The Perseverance award. Halton Hills Public Library offers a fabulous program called Baby Tales for infants and parents/caregivers to enjoy together. Participants use music, puppets, rhythm and rhymes to stimulate the babies, and it's a great way to meet other new parents! This program is free, and is offered at both the Georgetown and Acton branches, and at the Gellert Community Centre. Glen goodwill The Glen Williams "Irregulars" share the Christmas spirit by singing carols with the residents of Mountainview Seniors residence.
