10 Independent & Free Press,Thursday, January 14, 2010 Sports groups lauded By CYNTHIA GAMBLE Staff Writer PUBLIC INFORMATION SESSION Heritage Register for Halton Hills Council for the Town of Halton Hills wishes to inform all residents and business owners of a project that the Town is undertaking to identify properties of heritage value in order to update its Heritage Register. Residents and business owners are invited to attend a public information session to obtain information on the process and the proposed additions to the Register, as part of Phase 1 of a multi-phase project. The Heritage Register as specified in the Ontario Heritage Act is intended to assist municipalities in identifying their heritage resources, and is not the same as designation under the Ontario Heritage Act , in which a permit would be required for alterations to the heritage features of the property. Listing on the Heritage Register is an important heritage conservation tool, which allows the Town the ability to consider all options, ranging from proceeding to designation to removing the property from the Register. The Public Open House will include a brief formal presentation at 7:00 p.m., followed by a question period. Display boards will contain information to provide a context for the public to ask questions and engage in discussion with Town staff. ALL INTERESTED CITIZENS ARE ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND DATE/TIME: Thursday January 28, 2010, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Presentation at 7:00 p.m. LOCATION: Council Chambers, Civic Centre, 1 Halton Hills Drive, Georgetown FILE NO: D01/HE Heritage Register Residents or business owners wishing further information on the Heritage Register process are encouraged to contact Steve Burke of the Planning Department at: (905) 873-2601 ext. 2254 or stevebu@haltonhills.ca . The Acton Soccer Club, Georgetown Slopitch League, Georgetown Soccer Club and Field of Dreams committee were treated to a "virtual ribbon-cutting"-- a Powerpoint presentation with background music of The Beatles' Help-- by Manager of Parks and Open Space Warren Harris, and council-autographed game balls of appreciation presented by Mayor Rick Bonnette. The Acton Soccer Club, with 1,300 youth players, contributed $150,000 to the development of two lit senior soccer fields at the Acton Sports Park. "It's been a phenomenal contribution to the town and I hope to the club as well," said Harris. The Georgetown Slopitch League, with 1,200 adult members, contributed $100,000 to the goal of a four-plex of major diamonds in Trafalgar Sports Park. The first diamond opened in July. Club spokesperson Tim Abbott, who said, "it's nice to celebrate success", committed the group to another $25,000 to help put lights onto the diamond. The Georgetown Soccer Club, with 2,800 players, contributed $100,000 to phases four/ five of the Trafalgar Sports Park (TSP)-- six additional full soc- cer fields and related parking by March 2011. TSP currently has four existing fields. "I've been here on numerous occasions asking for your support for various soccer facilities but I always knew I would be standing here one night to say thank you," said Alice Strachan from the Georgetown Soccer Club. "You've done a great thing for soccer in Georgetown. We truly appreciate it." Finally, the Field of Dreams committee has raised about $385,000 for a state-of-art artificial football/soccer field and track surface at Georgetown District High School. "It started with the community, and it's really in the spirit of the community that the project reached out to form partnerships and alliances with key stakeholders (Town, school board, the community)," said Ian Troop, Field of Dreams committee member. "This has been a dream of ours and it's been a dream about helping kids to live their dreams." Troop said the expectation is to put the shovel in the ground this spring and have kids playing on the field in the fall of 2010. The Town has a long history of community partnerships. Future community projects will include the Mary Street Parkette garden development with the Georgetown Horticultural Society and the re-invention of the Georgetown Armoury building with Globe Musical Productions.
