GDHS swimmers look for big things in 2010 Continued from pg. 20 in meets at McMaster University, the University of Toronto, Brantford and Guelph. Newcombe noted that all of the school's relay teams have posted times that would put them in contention for medals at OFSAA and that a number of individual competitors appear headed for the provincial podium. Grade 11 student Cameron Elgie looks poised to repeat his double gold medal performance from 2009 despite moving up to the senior ranks for the 100m and 200m freestyle events. Halton Hills' Blue Fins' swimmer of the year Nadiya Safonova has opted to swim at the high school level and the Grade 10 student has posted times a whopping seven seconds faster than last year's OFSAA winner in the senior girls' 200m freestyle. Georgetown's boys have finished first in the team standings at OFSAA two years in a row and have claimed five of the last seven titles, while the Rebel girls are gunning for their first team trophy since 1989. "Our girls have been either second or third the past five years and hopefully that will change this time around, but it's going to take an outstanding effort and a lot of hard work," Newcombe added. The Rebels will play host to their own meet at the Georgetown Indoor Pool on Feb. 3 as a tuneup for the Halton championships on Feb. 10. The Golden Horseshoe meet is set for Feb. 17 and the OFSAA championships will take place again in Etobicoke March 1-3. 21 Independent & Free Press, Thursday, January 14, 2010 ATHLETES of the week Acton High School Jenn Doraty Spencer Milne Christ the King Jessica Hannan Joe Cortese G.D.H.S Kyle Speers Meaghan Plestid Acton High School Athletes of the Week are Spencer Milne and Jenn Doraty.
