YOU AND YOUR PET No one has come to see sweet Sassy By JUDITH-ANNE KOLU UCHS volunteer No one has shown any interest in Sassy and this is unbelievable to us because Sassy is a very attractive Collie/GSD cross approximately 2-3 years old. Just look at that face! Sassy probably has not had much of a life and came from another rescue organization after she was found pregnant and wandering in a dump looking for sustenance. Those days are over, her spirit survived and she is now at UCHS weighing in at 70 lbs+ on her medium frame and in good health. Sassy is sound in spirit, loving, housebroken, crate trained, has some basic commands, listens well but can become distracted in multiple situations. Sassy would be considered "medium energy" but when having freedom and fun can be bouncy and playful especially when YOU are her focus at play. Walking on a leash is a "work in progress", patience would have to be exercised as she learns the ropes and her confidence level 25 Independent & Free Press, Thursday, January 14, 2010 At long last Taylor is learning to trust By JUDITH-ANNE KOLU, UCHS volunteer Taylor is a handsome white male with brown tabby patches. Taylor is another long-term resident (arriving in the summer of 2008). Estimated at six years old, Taylor spent the first year of Shelter life in a cage TOO PETRIFIED to interact with either humans or other cats. This was extremely upsetting for us to deal with but through patience and dedication Taylor gradually became comfortable with certain people, but otherwise hid at the back of the cage. Not being seen is a detriment to being adopted that is for sure. Fast forward to today: Taylor is progressing well, his confidence level is rising which was demonstrated recently as an "unknown" approached him in a normal manner, and he didn't run away but graciously accepted pats and love and rubbed up against her in interaction....progress at last! Taylor is amicable with the other cats in the room, much preferring those who are easy-going while avoiding the younger rambunctious felines. However, we think Taylor could settle into a home with another quiet, laidback companion cat. Taylor would be ideal for someone who is looking for a quiet mature companion cat that won't be underfoot and demanding all the time. Quiet cats are so easy to live with, less work and fit into family life with little fanfare. Call 519-833-2287 or email adoptions@uppercredit.com. Note: We are appealing for donations of dry cat food, with over 100 cats, supplies are low. Pet of the Month matures. Sassy excels at trying to please you and would enjoy training classes. Sweet Sassy is very popular with the caregivers who feel she is a really great girl who gets along with all humans, some dogs, but CANNOT live with cats. Children over 12 are recommended for Sassy and she is ready to be taken to a loving home where we are convinced she will reach her potential! Sassy is as good-natured as she is good looking and has put her past behind her and is eagerly looking forward to meeting you. Sassy will take phone calls at 519-833-2287 or email adoptions@uppercredit.com to interact with her. The contest offered prizes to Shelters who voted by the best in U.S. and Canada. The local Upper Credit Humane Society finished out the money in fourth place and Cats Anonymous finished in 11th. But Cats Anonymous did win the prize in another category: Most Touching Story. Read Winnie's New Life by Tish Walshe: June 2006: Winnie, a semi-feral cat living on the streets with a litter of kittens, arrived at Cats Anonymous. She sat up on the shelf in her cage, hissing, ears flat. On the third day she flew out of the cage, over my head. I had to set the live trap to catch her in the quarantine room. The first time Winnie let me touch her was 6 months or more after she arrived. I was doing dishes and saw "Sweetie" (another cat who sort of looked like her) on the counter. I reached out to pet her, then realized that it was Winnie. She looked so worried, but so hopeful. I just kept slowly petting her. The first time Winnie sat on my lap was about a year ago. She had been winding around my feet, and then jumped up on the couch and right into my lap and purred. She stayed there quite a while. Winnie's gotten braver over the last few months, letting strangers pet her. A couple visited near the end of our open house, and Winnie turned on the charm, rolling, purring and carrying on. They were smitten. Today...Winnie was leaving us. We all acted nonchalant. I wanted so badly to hug her and kiss her, but knew I would give things away and she would run and hide. We got her into the carrier. She was horrified for a moment and cried. I felt like a traitor, apologized to her, and reassured her that everything would be ok. She settled down, trusting me once more. Brave girl. Tonight, her spot on the cat tree is empty, and I selfishly wish she was still there, but not really. She came so far, and now she will have a wonderful home of her own.
