4 Independent & Free Press, Tuesday,January 19, 2010 Police board to have opening A vacancy will be opening up on the seven-member civilian board that oversees the Halton Regional Police Services as Burlington lawyer Rick Burgess has decided not to accept another term as a provincial appointee. Burgess, who placed a close third in the race to become Burlington's mayor in the 2006 municipal election, said he will leave the police services board when his term expires Jan. 26. He has been on the board for the past five years as one of three provincial appointees, the other two being board Chair Bob Maich and Oakville resident Andrew Tyrrel. Burgess said his law practice has become much busier over the past five years and he was satisfied with what the board had achieved. A building on the Healing Hands for Haiti property in Port-au-Prince was reduced to rubble in last week's earthquake. The group's executive director, Eric Doubt of Georgetown, says two workers with the facility were killed. Meanwhile, two local women who operate an orphanage near the Haitian capital reported that all 13 children and staff members survived the quake and the building only sustained minor damage. The team is also to put up a temporary hospital support structure in co-ordination with functioning hospitals and provide leaflets on wound and injury care. Also, the team is to provide care and followup to people with amputation, spinal cord injuries and complex fractures and provide and fit people with prosthetic or orthotic devices. Doubt said the organization hopes to be able to recover a large supply of medicine and files in the facility and the plan is to move forward sooner than expected on construction of the facility's new Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Institute on the property. It will be the country's first, and ground was to be broken this year. There has been great support for the organization following the quake, said Doubt. "$10,000 came in, in 24 hours," said Doubt. He added much of that support has come from Georgetown. Georgetown resident Camille Otum, who with Audrey Hoekstra, also of Georgetown, and Era Ferron of Brampton, opened the Welcome Home Children's Centre orphanage in Cabaret, Haiti last year, received good news from the country Friday evening. "It was the best news ever," said Otum. She said she heard that all 13 children in the orphanage and staff members were fine (no one was injured in the quake) and there was only minor damage to the building. The orphanage is located about 25 km from Port-au-Prince. The damage is repairable and the orphans have been able to remain in the building. Otum said the plan is to bring in approximately 12 additional children from Port-auPrince who were orphaned as a result of the earthquake. Otum's 80-year-old blind aunt who also lives in Cabaret was not injured in the earthquake.
