Shop Local nears anniversary Now that the holiday season is over, it's time to get back into the regular routine. February marks the one year anniversary of the Shop Local, Shop Halton Hills campaign. A year ago, myself, Economic Development Officer Doug Penrice, along with business partners, merchants and local media, envisioned a campaign that would encourage consumers to think of Halton Hills merchants first. The Shop Local logo has been prominently displayed in over 500 locations. I would like to thank all of you for shopping local and making this program a success. Remember to give local businesses your support. ··· The Field of Dreams fundraising goal is now a reality! Kudos to the Field of Dreams Fundraising organization committee led by Ian Troop, Alice Strachan, Sue Culp, Jim Kardash, Steve Petit and Len Untinen. I hope I didn't leave anyone out. The group raised $500,000 in a short period of time needed to trigger construction of the Field of Dreams at GDHS. ··· I know many of you are touched by the clippings of the earthquake victims of Haiti. I was in Haiti in 1980 and I remember how poor it was back then. There are many charities out there collecting money for the Haitians, including Georgetown resident Eric Doubt who has been raising money for the Healing Hands for Haiti. For more information you can email 7 Independent & Free Press, Tuesday, January 26, 2010 Rick Bonnette Eric at eric@commassoc.ca. I am sure there will be other local organizations that will be doing something similar. ··· Once again, Halton Hills Firefighters hosted the Toronto Maple Leaf alumni in a hockey game before a sold-out crowd. Of course the Leaf alumni won despite a strong showing by your firefighters. Shauna Dunwoody, a cancer survivor came out again and played a strong game in goal for the Leafs. The big winner of this day was the Cancer Assistance Services Halton Hills (CAShh). Thanks to the organizers who arranged this special event. ··· On Feb. 6, Georgetown Market Place will feature more than 50 organizations serving the Halton Hills community. The theme this year is Believe it Halton Hills! ··· Keeping it real!
