Meghen Verheul, 26, of Limehouse works as a nurse at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto and has always wanted to help out in Africa. "I've always had a dream to work with children with HIV," said Verheul, who will leave for Uganda Feb. 19. She will be among 14 nurses from southern Ontario participating in the mission. When she arrives she will be able to choose from about six different placements where she will volunteer for approximately eight days. She said she could be working at an HIV/AIDS orphanage or in a children's hospice. The group will then spend two days hiking into remote villages bringing cooking kits and medical supplies to people in more remote areas. The nurses will also hold a mobile clinic for a day, providing vaccinations and wound care to the residents. Give International is a Canadianbased charitable trust working in relief and development, committed to providing volunteer placements for individuals willing to share their expertise within the organization's health, education, and child development programs. "I'm a little anxious, but I'm really excited to have my eyes opened up to a different way of life," said Verheul of the upcoming mission. The trip will cost Verheul $3,800, which covers her flight, hotel and meals, and also goes toward the cost of medical supplies for organizations working in the country.
