12 Independent & Free Press,Thursday, January 28, 2010 What's Cookin' is on the back burner Due to space limitations in today's newspaper, the What's Cookin' column and recipe has been postponed to next Thursday's edition. cooks out there: As an adjustment to the recipe for Crockpot Beef Burgundy, in the Jan. 14th edition, the recipe seems to have too much liquid, so please reduce liquid to two cups of broth and two cups of wine instead of three of each. Also, when you add the thickener in the last hour, the Lori Gysel & Gerry Kentner temperature needs to be turned on to high, in order for the juices to get hot enough to boil and thicken. I trust this will work better for everyone. Gerry Globe to present musical Assassins opening Feb. 5 By DANIELLE MORRIS Georgetown Globe Productions The musical Assassins, written by Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman is being brought to the intimate stage of St. Paul's hall in Norval by Georgetown Globe Musical Productions. It has been called both one of music theatre's most controversial shows, as well as one of its most challenging and complex. Assassins is a play that combines the eclectic musicality of most Sondheim pieces with a subject matter that can be unpleasant to examine. It challenges our preconceptions, and questions our most deeply held beliefs, daring us to look into the hearts of those whom frighten us most. Above all, it does so with an unwavering humour and sense of glee, which seems to belie the other emotions that are stirred up by the play's narrative. Through the narrator, played by Globe veteran Paul Stodonly, Assassins examines the lives and motivations of the successful and unsuccessful assassins of U.S. presidents. From the better known exploits of John Wilkes Booth to some of the lesser-knowns, like Guiseppe Zangara and Samuel Byck, the show holds a microscope to the notion of the American Dream and how twisted its meaning can become in the wrong hands. This show presents us with both a history lesson and a chance to get inside the minds of some very warped people (who all happen to sing brilliantly). Somehow, it also manages to make us laugh. Assassins is filled with strong content and language, and should only be viewed by a mature audience (16 and over). The musical is set to run February 5, 6, 11, 12, 13 at 8 p.m. and February 7 at 2 p.m., at the St. Paul's Parish Hall, Norval.
