SPORTS & LEISURE Struggling locals not feeling `in the pink' 11 Independent & Free Press, Tuesday, February 2, 2010 Raiders cut down by Blades By EAMONN MAHER Staff Writer Wearing different-coloured uniforms didn't seem to break the hex for the offensively slumping Georgetown Raiders Saturday and the good news is that the month of January is behind them. Adorned in pink uniforms as part of a fundraiser for breast cancer awareness, the Raiders were edged 2-1 by their rivals, the Oakville Blades, in front of close to 1,000 spectators Saturday at the Alcott Arena in the Ontario Jr. A Hockey League tilt. And while the evening was a resounding success from the fundraising standpoint, with approximately $4,000 collected for Cancer Assistance Services Halton Hills, the Raiders continued to be frustrated in the goal-scoring department, finishing the month with a 5-5-2 record. Outshot 32-27 on the night, an excellent outing by Georgetown goalie Tony Capobianco went for naught as the Blades scored twice early in the third period to break a scoreless draw. A late goal by Evan Rodrigues gave the home supporters some hope but quality chances were hard to get during the playoff-type, tight-checking contest. The Raiders were in Buffalo Monday evening looking for their first win against the Jr. Sabres after three losses this season. "It just seems that in the last couple of weeks we've been snakebitten around the net and right now we just want to get through this tough stretch and get ready for the playoffs," said Raiders' coach and general manager James Richmond. "That wasn't the same intensity of a typical Georgetown-Oakville game and we were tired after three games in three nights, but I still thought it was a good game to watch. It was great to see the arena nearly full for a great cause." With the loss, the third-place Raiders are seven points behind runner-up Oakville in the 15-team OJAHL and eight points ahead of fourth-place Villanova with nine games remaining in the regular season, including one date each with the Blades and front-running Kingston. Also last week, Georgetown trailed host Brampton Thursday 2-0 midway through the final frame before tying the score with goals from Dorian Peca and Dustin Hebebrand, then winning on a Rodrigues marker in the shootout. Capobianco was solid again Friday as the 34-9-4 Raiders prevailed 4-2 in Trenton over the Golden Hawks. Steve Perfetto, Justin Basso, Jeremy Wick and Kyle Essery provided the offence. Ahead this week, the Raiders will host Mississauga Wednesday at 8 p.m., followed by a trip to Huntsville Friday and a visit from the last-place IceHawks Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Future Olympian? Georgetown's Kelsey Carr will be among several Halton Hills residents getting into the Olympic spirit on Saturday, Feb. 6 as the Milton Speed Skating Club hosts its annual meet. The club's Olympic Warm Up runs from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Milton Sports Centre and is expected to draw several clubs from south-central Ontario in youth and adult divisions. The event will feature a silent auction and raffles for hockey and basketball tickets. Meanwhile, eight-year-old Carr moved into the top-10 ranked skaters in Ontario for the bantam girls' age group thanks to her personal-best times at the third Ontario Cup race of the season in Clarington and is tuning up for the provincial championships in Gloucester March 13-14. As well, new area resident Allana Zettler, a seven-year-old from B.C., earned a silver medal at a meet in Markham last month, while another rookie, nine-year-old David Bazso, earned bronze medals in the bantam division at competitions in Markham and Oakville. A large crowd was treated to an entertaining contest as part of the inaugural Pink In The Rink fundraiser, with the Blades winning 2-1. About $4,000 was raised by the Jr. A Raiders and another $2,000 was collected by Georgetown's peewee select Raiders, who faced off with Oakville earlier on. Photo by Eamonn Maher GEORGETOWN JR.
