SAME GREAT VEHICLES Outpouring of help impresses school's principal One Grade 3 girl donated $32 from her piggy bank to Robert Little Public School. The local fire department is loaning the Acton elementary computer monitors. One man brought in a bag of brand new books. Cleanup offers came by the dozens. And several people offered fish tanks to replace the ones that were damaged by vandals who trashed 11 of 19 classrooms at the elementary school a week ago. In short, principal Bob Tadman says, the support and phone calls, emails and faxes from the community-- as well as the wider Greater Toronto Area, Niagara, Guelph and Cambridge-- have been overwhelming. "The spirit of it all is so lovely," he A fish tank that was desaid Tuesday after stroyed in last week's breakreleasing a pub- in at Robert Little School. lic letter of thanks Halton Police photo (see page 6). "It more than makes up (for what happened). Bad stuff happens-- it just happens. But the measure of a community and the kind of connections you have with folks come afterwards. It has far outstripped the damage done." Of particular concern to the public was the death of 10 school fish after the vandals smashed their tanks. "A nerve seems to have been hit around the fish," he said. In fact, one man who graduated from the school in the 1960s has even offered his six-foot, 380-litre fish tank, which Tadman wants to set up in the foyer. "We'll let it be a sign and symbol of the kindness of the community," he said. With that donation, Tadman says he can go back to the donors and pet stores that have offered help and let them know what fish and equipment are needed, "and if they can help out with any of that, we're happy to take them up on the offer," he said. "My final line," says Tadman with a laugh, "is going to be `tanks a lot.'" In last week's break-in, computers were thrown to the floor, tables were overturned, windows were broken and one classroom was sprayed with a fire extinguisher. That room alone took a five-person crew 18 hours to clean. Damage to the school has been estimated in the tens of thousands. Robert Little has more than 400 students from Kindergarten to Grade 5; this year the school is celebrating 150 years at the Acton site. "Some things were lost that Tuesday morning," Tadman wrote in his letter. "But what we found was how much this school means to this community and that we have new friends from our larger community." Two 19-year-olds have been charged with break and enter, mischief and cruelty to animals. --Torstar News Service NOTICE OF PUBLIC INFORMATION CENTRE ROAD RECONSTRUCTION, SANITARY SEWER AND WATER LINE REPLACEMENT Queen Street from Guelph Street to King Street, Murdock Street from Queen Street to Albert Street Town of Halton Hills (Georgetown) As part of our 2010 construction program the Town of Halton Hills is proposing road reconstruction sanitary sewer and waterline replacement Queen Street from Guelph Street to King Street and on Murdock Street from Queen Street to Albert Street in Georgetown.
