Halton Hills gymnasts eyeing Ontario finals The Halton Hills Gymnastics Centre's competitive girls recently took part in their second provincial qualifier in Guelph and will try to earn spots in the Gymnastics Ontario championships based on their results at the final qualifying meet on the last weekend of February in Kingston. As well, three HHGC gymnasts, Shannon Daley, Rachael Karker and Bridget Irving, will compete at the Ontario Winter Games at Muskoka in March. In addition, some of the best junior women squash players in the province have been invited to demonstrate that you don't have to be big and strong to hit the squash ball hard. Jennifer Pelletier, the number-one-rated under-19 women's player in the province from the Richmond Hill Squash Club, will also be among those on court. Admission is free and everyone is welcome. The Bearcat swim team members had impressive results at last week's meet at Georgetown District High School, with Valsamis finishing first in her heat for the junior girls' 50m backstroke. Ewing also placed first in a heat for the junior boys' 50m backstroke in a time of 50 seconds flat. Georgetown District High School Athletes of the Week are swimmers Kristen Davison and John Paul Thomson. The 14-year-old Davison registered four top-four placings at last week's regional swim meet in Georgetown and is one of the team's most dedicated members, regularly making five or six practices a week. Thomson took five seconds off his personal best time for the 100m freestyle at the Georgetown meet and is on the verge of qualifying for OFSAA. Christ the King Athletes of the Week are Brendan Krivec and Shayne Brown. Both play for the Jaguar varsity hockey team that recently captured its division championship at the annual Bur-Bear tournament in Burlington. Krivec, a right-winger, had four goals and five assists during the tourney, and Brown, the goalkeeper, allowed just five goals in three games, including CtK's 5-1 triumph over St. Thomas Aquinas in the final.
