Photo by Ted Brown Sewage treatment plant upgrades to cost $10.8M Continued from pg. 3 and did some misting that included a covering fragrance that "helped a little." But Andrews said the long-term fix will be the new digester. "The new digester will address the bulk of the odours," said Andrews. The new digester will increase the capacity of the solids handling and digestion process to match the capacity of the facility. "This project will improve the existing biosolids loading system and reduce the on-site storage requirements. Both of these outcomes are anticipated to reduce the odours at the plant and surrounding area," said Andrews in a recent report to Halton Region's Planning and Public Works Committee. As well as the new digester, the Region will also be rehabilitating the old digester and making gas room modifications at the plant. Total cost of the project is expected to be $10.8 million. The contract is expected to be awarded by this spring, with the new digester to be up and running by late next year. When the HST (a blend of PST and GST) comes into effect July 1, electricity bills would go up by 8 per cent, says Ward 4 Bob Inglis, who proposed the endorsement. "Eight per cent is a huge disadvantage for middle and low income families," Inglis said. "The motion here is not asking the Province to abolish this tax-- it's strictly asking to make an exemption in the case of electricity rates."
