14 Independent & Free Press,Thursday, March 11, 2010 GDHS debate team wins Halton title By HUGH WATSON GDHS teacher On Friday, Feb. 19, six members from Georgetown District High School's debate team travelled to Abbey Park High School in Oakville to compete against eight other schools from across Halton region. The resolution being debated at this year's regional finals was "This house believes Members of the Georgetown High School debate team display their that the current educational systrophies won at the Halton-wide competition. In the individual speaker category, Chelsea Jackson placed sixth, Kylie de Chastelain placed third and Holly Kallmeyer placed second overall out of a total of 52 debaters. The added performances of both Erik Smith and Jack Britton provided GDHS with the total points needed to secure its first regional title since being formed in 2006. In the team category, Dryden Bailey and Chelsea Jackson earned a respectable fourth place finish while the team of Kylie de Chastelain and Holly Kallmeyer secured an impressive second place after being narrowly defeated by a team from Abbey Park. As a result of their efforts, both teams will go on to represent Halton at the upcoming Ontario provincial championships in Ottawa on March 25. Needless to say, the GDHS team is looking forward to defending its crown as the returning Ontario provincial champions.
