Celebrities throw support behind second annual ALS hockey game By LISA TALLYN Staff Writer The second annual ALS Charity Hockey Game between Halton Hills Firefighters and the Georgetown Minor Hockey Association coaches is set for Saturday, April 3. All money raised at the hockey game at Mold-Masters SportsPlex and a dance to follow that evening at Gellert Centre will go towards the ALS Society of Ontario. The fundraisers are being organized by GMHA coaches Murray Anderson and Wendy Highfield and Halton Hills firefighters Kevin Usher and Rob Clark. Last year's hockey game raised $14,000 and organizers are hoping to bring in at least that again this year. The game will begin at 1:30 p.m. Doors open at 12:30 p.m. The guest of honour will be Dr. Jeff Sutherland, longtime Georgetown resident and family doctor, who was diagnosed with ALS in 2008. Playing in the game will be singer Michael Burgess, former NHLer Pat Hickey and Dave Hanson of Slap Shot movie fame. Ex-New York Ranger great Harry Howell will be on the bench as an assistant coach. Tickets for the game and the dance will be for sale at the door and also at Mold-Masters SportsPlex from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday (March 27). Tickets are also available in advance at J.V. Clothing, Halton Hills Radiator & Tire Service and Sports Unlimited. The cost is $5 per person for the game and $20 per person ($40 per couple) for the dance. The Booster Club will be open during the game providing food and drinks. There will also be prizes for kids at the hockey game. The dance will feature Chris Potter and The Bulky Boys. The dance will be held at 8 p.m. Saturday (April 3) at the Gellert Centre. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. The band features former Max Webster drummer Gary McCracken. There will also be a silent auction, food and drink. Anderson is asking several businesses to donate items for the silent auction or make monetary donations to the ALS Society. Pepsi is donating pop for the dance and Halton Hills' Mike Holmes of Make It Right is donating an auction item. For more information or to donate a silent auction item e-mail Anderson at qualitytreeservice@cogeco.ca, or wendy.highfield@sympatico.ca.
