Local recycling centres help communities practise the 3Rs Most communities have a recycling centre serving that particular town or region. There are many reasons why this centre may have begun. For instance, the local residents may have been opposed to garbage proposals such as landfills or incinerators, or they might have wanted to help their community practice the three R's. Many centres offer communitybased education programs and recycling and reusing opportunities while generating revenue through the sale of used goods. These centres are places where people socialize, browse, tinker and go the extra distance to "do their part." The centres are generally a common link to all sectors of the area and promote sustainable community economic development while offering unique ways to manage waste. Recycling centres help promote the reduction, reuse and recycling of waste generated by the community by offering a one-stop shopping place where waste generators can drop off recyclables and sell good used items at a reasonable cost. Items such as books, clothes, dishes, small appliances and hardware find a second home that is not a landfill. They divert resources from disposal by supporting and developing outlets for all reusable and recyclable items, such as waste exchanges and e-waste recycling programs. They encourage and educate institutions, industries, business and individuals in the community on how to develop efficient methods of waste management. Your local 3R centre works with many other organizations within the community, such as daycares, senior centres, humane society, schools, special interest groups and churches, by providing reusable and recyclable items for education or fundraising purposes at a reduced cost or free. Once established, centres are pleased to offer financial donations in the form of scholarships to students pursuing studies in the environmental field and small grants to local schools and groups who need funds for waste management projects. Most centres welcome volunteers of all ages and give high school students an opportunity to earn their mandatory community service hours. Please contact your local community recycling centre to see what it has to offer. Happy recycling! Article submitted by Wastewise, located on Armstrong Ave. in Georgetown.
