32 Independent & Free Press,Thursday, April 15, 2010 3,000 trees to be planted Saturday By EMILY YATES Special to The Independent & Free Press It's time to break out the gloves and shovels. About 200 members from the Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Venturers as part of the Scoutree unit will meet at the Dufferin Quarry in Acton as part of Dufferin's Earth Day celebrations to plant 3,000 trees, donated by Dufferin, between 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 17. With them will be employees of Dufferin and parents to aid in the planting. "This will be our 37th year (tree planting)," said a proud Scoutree Co-ordinator George Henderson, who has been with the Scouts for 37 years. "It's a win-win situation for us," explains Henderson. "We get to help green up the quarry. It's good for Dufferin and it's good for us." The Scoutree unit uses the tree planting as a fundraising opportunity. By going door-to-door asking for donations, they are able to donate to the Scout Brotherhood Fund, a fund dedicated to assisting developing nations. This year, the Scoutree unit in Acton raised $500. They have donated $200 of that to the Scout Brotherhood Fund. The other $300 will go to the Scouts. In previous years, the money has been used to build a community centre and a hurricane shelter in Belize, a school in Paraguay and to provide food for children in Peru, Ghana and Namibia.
