4 Independent & Free Press,Thursday, April 22, 2010 Quarry application moves to next phase By LISA TALLYN Staff Writer The proposed Dufferin Aggregates Acton quarry extension application is moving into the next stage. Tuesday, May 4 will be the beginning of the 45-day notification and consultation period. The consultation period, in accordance with the Aggregate Resources Act, will provide the framework for the public to submit formal comments regarding the Acton Quarry Extension License application. A public information session will be held Tuesday, June 1 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Acton District High School, 21 Cedar Rd. At the session the public will learn details of the quarry application. The proposed extension is to be situated to the north and south of the existing quarry on lands owned by the company. The extension area is approximately 300 hectares, and the extraction would occur on about 100 hectares. The plan by Dufferin is not to touch the remaining land. Once formal comments are received, Dufferin Aggregates representatives will meet interested stakeholders to discuss and formally respond to the comments. This stage of the process is anticipated to continue for the better part of a year. "Public consultation is an important element in developing our Acton Quarry vision and we are pleased to work on the next steps together with the community," said Andrea Bourrie, Director, Planning and Regulatory Affairs of Holcim Canada, of which Dufferin is a division. "Subject to approval of the Acton Quarry Extension, and as part of its formal extension plans Dufferin Aggregates has committed to donate 600 ha of land it currently owns to the public." Bourrie said the land could provide for year-round public recreation such as hiking, biking, beach/swimming fishing, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing opportunities as well as conservation of wetlands, lakes, woodlands and a limestone cliff habitat. Dufferin still likely has six to seven years of extraction left in the current phase of the quarry, and if approved, the extension would likely have approximately a 20-25 year extraction life span depending on market conditions. A detailed site plan and reports for the proposal can be examined at the Town of Halton Hills or Region of Halton offices or at the Ministry of Natural Resources office, Aurora District, 50 Bloomington Rd. W., RR 2 Aurora, ON. Objections to the application must be sent in writing by June 18 to Dufferin Aggregates and the Ministry of Natural Resources at: Dufferin Aggregates (c/o MHBC Planning), 13 Poyntz Street, Barrie, ON, L4M 3N6 and to the Ministry of Natural Resources at the above address. closes on y a d r u t a s 0 2010 Jetta Starting from $23,915 +GST&PST Also available as TDI Clean Diesel 2010 Tiguan Starting from $29,830 +GST&PST 2010 Golf Starting from $22,915 +GST&PST Also available as TDI Clean Diesel % APR up to 36 months on all models* AJAC 2010 Canadian Car of the Year 2010 Golf GTI Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Top Safety Pick 2010 Jetta / 2010 Golf 5-door / 2010 Tiguan Up to $750 Rebate** for qualified college & university grads.
