During the clinic, organized by Halton Regional Police Saturday at the Milton GO station, 186 child seats were inspected and 96 failed-- a 53 per cent failure rate. "This was better than last year's failure rate of 79 per cent but still not acceptable," said Sgt. Meg Williams. Fifteen of the drivers had to leave the inspection area to get new seats. Inspectors did a six-point inspection on the child car seat. Drivers were sent on their way if they got a 6/6 score. If one component of the inspection got a failing grade, a full inspection was done by an inspector from the Halton Partners for Car Seat Safety (HPCSS). Problems included: · seats installed incorrectly · children who were not in the proper seats · tether straps used as the only connection to the vehicle · shoulder straps that were so loose the child could potentially be dislodged from the seat in a collision. Participating in the clinic with police were representatives from Halton Partners for Car Seat Safety, which includes Health Services, EMS, Fire Department, Ontario Provincial Police and volunteers from the Communities on Phone Patrol. At the clinic, car seats were purchased by HPCSS for two families having financial difficulties.
