Photo by Ted Brown Georgetown school on backburner Halton's Catholic school board has given the go-ahead for Lumen Christi elementary school to open in Milton in 17 months but two other schools-- including one in Georgetown-- are on hold. Board staff also anticipate receiving funding from the Province "in the very near future" for a second high school in Milton and the West Oak Trails #5 elementary school in Oakville, according to a report reviewed by trustees recently. However, two other schools the board had at one time hoped to open by the next school year are now on the backburner-- Iroqouis Ridge #2 elementary school in Oakville and Georgetown West, a replacement for Holy Cross elementary school. "They're below in priority," explained Giacomo Gorbacio, the board's superintendent of facility services. The Ministry recently approved two projects consisting of four classroom additions at St. Brigid and St. Catherine of Alexandria elementary schools in Georgetown. While Ontario's Ministry of Education has approved the business case for the three schools, it hasn't officially signed off yet on funding them. However, in anticipation of that approval, the board of trustees voted for school board staff to borrow the $11.3 million needed to finance the construction of Lumen Christi. Gorbacio clarified the board wouldn't actually borrow the money until it receives a letter from the Ministry giving it the go-ahead. However, the board's approval for staff to go to the bank for money will expedite the development process once that Ministry letter arrives.
