10 Independent & Free Press,Thursday, May 6, 2010 Bring a can of food; get free compost Somewhere down the road you're going to have to think about it. We all face it, but most of us avoid thinking about it: our final preparations. By doing something today you will be saving yourself and your family 8% of the new Harmonized Sales Tax (HST). Halton Region is inviting local residents to get ready for the spring gardening season by picking up free compost at its waste management site in central Halton just south of the town of Milton. From Monday, May 10 until Saturday, May 15, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., residents can pick up a maximum of seven bags or containers of compost. Though the material is free, residents must bring their own shovel and bags or containers. The Region is also encouraging attendees to bring a cash donation or a nonperishable food item to be donated to local food banks. During last year's compost giveaway, 5,000 residents picked up approximately 1,500 tonnes of compost. They also dropped off seven tonnes of food and a record $12,172 for the food banks. More than 1,500 tonnes of processed compost will be available to residents this spring. The material is produced from the 33,000 tonnes of leaves, brush and other yard waste diverted from the Region's landfill last year. For best growing results, the Region said it is recommended to mix the compost together. The Halton Waste Management Site is located at 5400 Regional Road 25 in Milton.
