Tons of trash collected during Makeover, cleanup By LISA TALLYN Staff Writer Halton Hills is looking cleaner and greener following this year's Earth Week and Earth Day events. "Our community once again demonstrated its commitment and interest in environmental matters," said Halton Hills Mayor Rick Bonnette. Area residents, business people and Town staff took to the schoolyards, parks, rural areas, open spaces, ditches, ravines and any place they could find to pick up litter during the 22 Minute Makeover (April 22) and Community Wide Clean Up Day (April 17). More than seven tonnes of garbage, two tandem truck loads of tires, one tandem truck load of metal and another tandem truck load of wood and other objects that were later picked up by the Town. Town staff alone collected about 70 bags of garbage during the 22 Minute Makeover. "We are grateful for the hundreds of stalwart volunteers who braved the elements this year to improve our local environment," said Councillor Jane Fogal, chair of the Litter Free Halton Hills Committee. 11 Independent & Free Press, Thursday, May 6, 2010 HOT TUB TRUCKLOAD SALE Christ the King Grade 11 students (from left) Kristen Harquail, Becky Santo and Mario D'Onofrio were among the hundreds of kids who took time to pick up some garbage around the school during the 22 Minute Makeover. From the successful tree sale at the Robert C. Austin Operations Centre, to the popular green building tours at the Devereaux House to the many activities that took place at Georgetown Market Place, Earth Day was well-celebrated in Halton Hills," said Bonnette.
