10 Independent & Free Press,Thursday, May 20, 2010 Robson says Glen construction work won't hamper July 1 celebrations By CYNTHIA GAMBLE Staff Writer The ongoing construction on Wildwood Rd. should not affect the Canada Day party in Glen Williams too much, says Councillor Joan Robson. The Ward 2 Councillor, who lives in Glen Williams, says many residents have been questioning the effect construction would have on the annual festivities. The lower portion of Wildwood Rd. should be fully acessible by July 1, with only minor work from Erin St. to Confederation St. left to do. Parking will be available. The Town is working with the contractor to ensure the road from Oak Ridge to Erin St. is open for July 1. However that may mean only a gravel driving surface, and the road will have to be closed again for a few weeks after the parade. The walkway, from Erin St. to Oak Ridge, likely will not be completed as it is usually the last portion worked on. "I just want people to know that they will be able to get down from the top (of Wildwood Rd.) and there will also be parking at the bottom," said Robson. "Everything will be in place for Canada Day." West Nile control program underway The Halton Region Health Department began its annual West Nile virus (WNV) control and surveillance program earlier this week. "Health Department staff will monitor for the amount and type of adult mosquitoes and mosquito larvae to determine the human risk of West Nile virus," said Dr. Bob Nosal, Medical Officer of Health for Halton Region. Despite WNV positive mosquitoes found in various traps across the region in 2009, there were no reported cases of Halton residents infected with WNV last year. To reduce the risk of WNV, larvicides are used to control specific species of mosquitoes. Larvacides B.t.i. and methoprene are used to safely kill mosquito larvae before they develop into adult mosquitoes. Larviciding will begin when Halton Region staff identify mosquito larvae in catch basins or other areas of standing water. Locations that have received larviciding can be found at www.halton.ca/wnv. Standing water sites will also have a sign posted. Residents are reminded to avoid being outside at dusk and dawn, cover-up, and wear insect repellent containing DEET.
