Cristina Bedggood, a 16-year-old from Georgetown who currently trains at Futures Gymnastics in Mississauga, earned two gold medals at The Eastern Canadian Championships held in the National Open category. She won the floor and beam exercises. Thirteen-year-old Eric Shieh of Georgetown and the Gymnastics Mississauga club team received the overall gold medal for the Level 4 category at the Eastern Canadian meet in Mississauga, finishing first in floor and pommel, while also picking up a silver in ring and bronze in vault. As well, Shieh served as the flag bearer for Team Ontario for the opening ceremonies thanks to his dominant showing at the provincial championships, in which he scooped up gold medals for all of the exercises except the high bar, for which he received bronze. Milton-based Gold Medal Gymnastics scored another milestone when National Open 16-and-up competitor Marc de Lestard of Limehouse secured overall silver at the Eastern Canadian Championships. He highlighted the meet with gold on rings and a tie for first on the high bar. His efforts on the floor and pommel horse were both good enough for silver. This followed a strong showing for the Gold Medal club at the Ontario championships in Burlington, where David Sandro struck overall silver in the Provincial Level 2 under-10 class, thanks to five individual medal performances. This included a gold on the parallel bars. He was second on the floor, pommel horse and horizontal bar and claimed bronze on rings. Age-class teammate Lucas Schinkel took fifth overall-- grabbing a bronze for his vault-- while de Lestard turned in a silver-medal effort on the horizontal bar and placed eighth in the allaround. In the National High Performance Argo 10-to-12-year-old ranks, Gold Medal's Ryan Oehrlein, Andrew Pietras and Jeremy Meneses placed eighth, ninth and 14th respectively. All three are in Kamloops, B.C. this week for the Canadian championships. Captain Greg Nyhof had the only goal in CtK's 1-0 victory Tuesday in Oakville against White Oaks as the Jags clinched third place in the HSSAA AAAA division. They'll face Iroquois Ridge in today's (Thursday's) quarterfinals in Oakville, as will Georgetown District High School's senior girls, who are seeded fifth in the AAAA division.
