Submitted photo Hockey news and notes Cull opts to take Wolves' helm By EAMONN MAHER Staff Writer Local native Trent Cull was in line for a promotion to a head-coaching job in the American Hockey League, but has decided to re-enter the junior ranks instead. The 36-year-old former Georgetown Jr. A Raider was named head coach of the Ontario Hockey League's Sudbury Wolves last week after four years as an assistant with the AHL's Syracuse Crunch. Cull said he had a number of offers from other AHL teams, but figures to have more control over a rebuilding Sudbury squad, which was swept out of the first round of playoffs this spring by the Barrie Colts. "I wanted to come somewhere where it is on me," Cull told the Sudbury Star. "Being a head coach in the American Hockey League, I would have a mandate that is coming down from the NHL team and instead I can come here where I can sink or swim and that's what I want. I want it to be on me and I want to be the guy who is moving this organization in the right way. "I had some other opportunities, but when I came up here the first thing that impressed me is that this organization is filled with good people. They are passionate about the game and they are starved for some success and I hope to be the guy who can bring that here for them." Prior to joining Syracuse, Cull was an assistant for two years with the OHL's Guelph Storm. His playing career ended in 2004 after several years in the AHL as a rugged, smart defender. Cull replaces Mike Foligno, who was both coach and GM for the Wolves last season. Ernie Corbett December 28th, 1924 - may 23rd, 2009 Husband of Flo, Dad to David and Gary, Grampa to Nathan and Kayla and Great Grampa to Riley, Raven and Rayne We all miss you. Love, Margot, Cody and Nicole Giudice re-signs with Fassa The Fassa Hockey Club in Italy has announced that it has re-signed left winger Gerome Giudice for two more seasons. The former Sudbury Wolves' captain had a solid rookie season in the Italian League as he scored nine goals and had 11 assists in 35 league games with four goals and six points during the quarter-final playoffs. Giudice, who now lives in Acton, is a former star at Brampton's St. Thomas Aquinas. After four years in Sudbury he played with the Muskegon Lumberjacks of the International Hockey League before moving to Italy.
