THURSDAY, May 27, 2010 4 Pages PERFECT PUPILS Elementary public and Catholic students selected as Student Excellence & Sharing the Spirit reps are profiled PAGES 2-4 STUDENT EXCELLENCE Special pullout section Kalsey Smith Acton High School Kalsey is a Grade 12 student, who has maintained her Honours standing academically throughout her high school career. An enthusiastic and talented athlete, she has been a key player for Bearcat teams in volleyball, basketball, track & field and badminton. Kalsey also found time to swim for the Acton Aquaducks. In school she has acted as an effective Peer Tutor, and in her community she has volunteered time in her church nursery. Acton High School is very proud to have Kalsey as its Student Excellence representative. Students honoured for their contributions Students representing each of the Halton District School Board's elementary and secondary schools were recently honoured at the 26th annual Celebration of Student Excellence. A student from each public school was selected to be that school's representative of exceptional qualities in at least two of the following areas: academic, vocational and athletic fields, selfimprovement, community work, citizenship and student leadership, or specific criteria that reflects the school's unique priorities. Halton Catholic District School Board also honoured its outstanding students at its 22nd annual Sharing the Spirit Award of Excellence celebration. Students selected demonstrated Catholic leadership, family commitment, involvement in the school and community activities and commitment to a difficult task or situation. As well, HCDSB Special Education Advisory Committee presented its region-wide Spirit of Inclusion Awards. In this special section, we showcase the Halton Hills students selected to represent our local HDSB and HCDSB schools. Laura Crawford Georgetown High School Laura, a Grade 12 student, has excelled in all areas of school life at Georgetown District High School. She is an honour roll student who has participated on the school soccer and basketball teams and is a valued member of the Student Athletic Council and Social Justice League. She has also played on the school concert band since Grade 9. Outside of school, Laura has accumulated an unprecedented amount of volunteer hours. She volunteers at the Georgetown Bread Basket, is a member of the Mayor's Youth Action Committee, has received the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze and Silver Awards, and is working towards receiving her Gold Award. Victoria Julien Gary Allan High School (Georgetown campus) Victoria is in her second and final year of the TEAM (Teenage Education and Motherhood) program in Gary Allan High School, Georgetown. She has achieved exemplary grades in her Grade 12 courses while being a wonderful and caring mother to her son, Sebastian. Also, Victoria is a strong advocate for the TEAM program and supports other teen moms as they transition back into high school. Victoria plans to attend college. Rose Schmidt Christ the King Catholic High School Rose is an honours student who believes in the beauty and responsibility of sharing the Word of the Lord with her peers, teachers and family. Her involvement at Holy Cross Church in the choir and as an Extraordinary Minister and her school involvement in the Pro-Life Club and the Social Justice Committee at Christ the King Catholic Secondary School model this faith in action.
