4 Student Excellence, Thursday, May 27, 2010 Halton school boards celebrate Student Excellence and Sharing the Spirit James Bursa Robert Little James, a Grade 5 student, exemplifies all the qualities of a true Student of Excellence. A very caring young man who never hesitates to help others, James quietly and consistently displays outstanding leadership qualities in the school and the community. He models a high level of commitment to the numerous extra curricular activities. Jennifer Lewis Silver Creek Jennifer, a Grade 8 student, was selected for her overall contribution to silver creek. She is an integral member of the students in action committee and she has been fundamental in several school wide initiatives including working towards an eco-certification. Jennifer is a natural leader and she is well respected by staff and students alike, dedicating countless hours to the school band/choir. Torie McDermot St. Brigid Torie has been selected as the St. Brigid School recipient due to her exemplary Catholic leadership qualities and overall involvement in school affairs. Her positive relationship with staff and students, along with her discernible commitment to family and Church, are acknowledged and valued by all members of the Catholic faith community of the school. Karlina Fiaes St. Catherine of Alexandria Karlina models the leadership that the Church and society call for. She demonstrates excellent academic achievement, develops and maintains positive relationships with peers and teachers and embraces her faith as she lives her life in the light of Gospel values. Amanda Bruder St. Francis of Assisi Amanda is a very dedicated student, who has a strong commitment to her faith. She is an excellent role model and assists on many committees that promote this caring Catholic school community, including the yearbook, tutoring and intramural committees. She is also involved in weekly Church masses with her family and is a dedicated member in the Church choir. Joshua Beaune St. Joseph Joshua has been selected for this recognition, because he consistently displays the qualities that the staff of St. Joseph School, strive to foster. His willingness to assist his peers and compassion for others is a testament to his faith. He leads by example through his respectful, positive attitude, excellent academic results and leadership in environmental and school safety issues. Jacqueline Tanguay Stewarttown Jacqueline, a Grade 8 student, is an outstanding, well-rounded student at Stewarttown. She has been working toward a school letter and has achieved a high score in all areas of citizenship, academics, extra curricular and leadership. Jacqueline is the student who gets involved in all components of the school program, music, volleyball, office helper and being a buddy for the special needs students. Steven Brake and Maryanne Kovalchek HCDSB Special Education Advisory Committee award winners Steven is a valued member of the St. Andrew School, Oakville community. Steven maintains a positive attitude towards learning and enthusiastically embraces the use of assistive technology and support for his learning disability. He demonstrates genuine empathy and sensitivity to the needs of others, making him an exemplary model of Catholicity and inclusion for special needs students. Maryanne of Corpus Christi Catholic Secondary School, Burlington was the student lead in "Learning Outside the Lines", advocating for students facing learning challenges and who are striving for acceptance and independence.
