8 Independent & Free Press, Tuesday,June 8, 2010 2FCÏ0CEGML?J Police issue warning to restaurants www.halton.ca Halton Regional Police Service and Halton Region's Health Department are issuing a warning to restaurant staff after recent incidents in the region of people fraudulently impersonating a health inspector by calling local restaurants to schedule an inspection. Police stress that restaurant employees and owners should not give out personal, private or secure information over the phone to any caller whose identity they aren't certain of. Police say this type of criminal fraudulent activity is known in other areas, and now in Halton. Incidents have occurred in Burlington, Oakville and Halton Hills. Police say a number of restaurant operators have been contacted by phone by people alleging to be a public health official. They are requesting to schedule an inspection of the premise, and detailed business and personal information from the owner/operator, and are requesting a call back to confirm the personal information through the use of a unique code number. Police say Halton Region Health department public health inspectors don't request any personal information for the purpose of scheduling or conducting inspections. They say inspectors just show up, and don't make an appointment. Regional staff always carry photo identification and will produce it upon request. Restaurant owners and operators are asked to contact either Halton Police at 905-878-5511 or Halton Region Health Department at 1-866-442-5866 for more information.
