28 Independent & Free Press,Thursday, June 17, 2010 LeFeuvre honoured for lifelong career in racing Continued from pg. 25 work from everywhere to get a shot at that. I got second place and won $3,000 behind (former IndyCar star) Robby Gordon, whose background was in off-road. It was a thrill for us when Robby showed the seven twoounce gold bars-- 24 karat from Chase Manhattan-- to my daughter Alex. That was something else." LeFeuvre built his own air-cooled engines at his home-based shop and the liquid-cooling engines came from Autocraft in Toledo, Ohio. During his lengthy career he wrote off just two cars in crashes, breaking his leg at a Stratford-area race, and thanks to the five-point driver's harness, walking away uninjured from the other that left a seat cover as the only salvageable part of the wreck. When BF Goodrich politely decided to discontinue its financial support of LeFeuvre in 1997 after 13 years as a sponsor in favour of backing an entire series, he wasn't interested in continuing at a less-competitive level. "We still go to as many events as we can in races that I've run in and also a lot of races throughout the States," he added. "There are still a few of the old guys running. They're getting up there, yet it's still a lot of fun. I know how most of them are going to do because I did it for so many years. I always go into the pits and hang around, rather than sit in the stands and then just go home. after the race is over." LeFeuvre enjoyed an illustrious career of auto racing in rallies, on ice and in stock cars.
