Book now! Location of Glen painting pinpointed By LISA TALLYN Staff Writer The mystery of the location of the street scene in the A.J. Casson painting, Street in Glen Williams, that recently sold at auction for a record $542,800 has been solved, say some area residents. Three area residents-- Derek Remes, Bob Hooper and Russ Allen-- all agree the street scene depicted in the large oil canvas by the Group of Seven artist is looking northward at Main St. and Joseph St. All of the houses in the painting are still there. Long-time Glen Williams resident Remes said when he saw the painting he was pretty sure he knew where it was done. Bob Hooper, born and raised in Glen Williams and now living in Georgetown, felt the same way when he saw the photo of the painting on the front of The Independent & Free Press June 8. "As soon as I saw the picture I knew exactly where it was," said Hooper. "When I was looking at the photo it felt like a piece of Lego clicking into another piece of Lego," said Allen, who also grew up in Glen Williams. The painting was done circa 1938 and sold at Joyner Waddingtons Spring Auction of Important Canadian Art in Toronto June 1. Joyner Vice-President Rob Cowley said it wasn't known what street in Glen Williams was depicted in the painting. Canadian art critic and historian Paul Duval wrote in 1980 that Street in Glen Williams is unquestionably Casson's key autumn portrait. Casson painted many rural scenes in southern Ontario. Other area paintings by Casson include Country Road-- Glen Williams, Early Summer Norval, Rockwood (Old Quarry) and Farmhouse (near Glen Williams 1938).
