10 Independent & Free Press,Thursday, June 24, 2010 Quake felt in Halton Hills By LISA TALLYN Staff Writer CYCLING MASTER PLAN NOTICE OF PUBLIC INFORMATION CENTRE # 2 The Town of Halton Hills is nearing completion of a study to develop a Town-wide Cycling Master Plan. We would like to invite you to join us on June 29, 2010 at the Town of Halton Hills Civic Centre starting at 6:00 p.m. to review the draft Cycling Master Plan and tell us what you think! The draft Halton Hills Cycling Master Plan (HHCP) is generally based on the "complete streets" concept, and proposes an integrated and convenient cycling network. This is designed to improve cyclist safety and encourage Halton Hills residents to cycle to work, school and other destinations in the Town, and to enjoy cycling for recreation and fitness. The new Cycling Plan identifies a long term implementation strategy that identifies priorities for cycling network improvements, provides a set of design guidelines to guide Town staff, and outlines a strategy to educate the public about cycling in Halton Hills. SECOND PUBLIC INFORMATION CENTRE (PIC): The purpose of this Second Public Information Centre (the first PIC was held in September 2009) is to present the draft Cycling Master Plan to the residents of Halton Hills. We want your feedback on the draft plan including the alternative network solutions (candidate routes), the preferred cycling network, the associated implementation strategy as well as key study recommendations. The 5.0 magnitude earthquake that struck the Ontario/Quebec border region about 1:41 p.m. yesterday (Wednesday) could be felt in Halton Hills. Jocelyn Dragosits, manager at Silver Creek Towers on Park Avenue in Georgetown, said she was working in her main floor office when the quake struck. "The whole building was definitely shaking," said Dragosits. "I thought, am I having a stroke or something?" She said tenants weren't evacuated but some did run outside. After the shaking stopped, Dragosits said her phone rang off the hook from tenants inquiring what had happenend, and asking if there was construction being done on the building. She said one resident told her she was worried that she might have taken too much medication. Dragosits reassured her she wasn't the only one who felt the quake. Dragosits said they did a quick inspection, did not see any damage to the apartment buildings, and there wasn't any reported. Georgetown resident Anne Currie was attending the Georgetown Hospital Volunteer Association's Strawberry Social at the Lions Hall when the coffee began swirling in the cups. "The floor was shaking and the china was tinkling, and everyone looked at each other but didn't know what it was," she said, adding it lasted about 15 seconds. Asked if people were concerned, she replied, "Nobody turned a hair." Halton Police Public Affairs Officer Sgt. Brian Carr said across the region police received dozens of phone calls from people reporting their homes were shaking. Carr also said he felt the Halton Police Headquarters, at 1151 Bronte Rd. in Oakville, shake slightly during the same period. Locally, Halton police received a couple of calls from the public to report the quake, and Halton Hills Fire Department only one call. They had no reports of damage or injuries. So far Halton-wide police are reporting no damage and no injuries associated with the tremors, which have been described by some as similar to being in a boat that is being hit by small waves. The epicentre of the quake was 45 kilometres north of Gatineau, Que. A geological fault line runs through the Ottawa Valley-- part of the reason why the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission has insisted on rigorous checks and balances for the nuclear reactor in Chalk River. The last big earthquake in the region was in October 1998 when an earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale rocked southern Ontario. WHY SHOULD YOU ATTEND? If you are a recreational or utilitarian cyclist, parents of kids who ride their bikes, someone who would like to cycle more often to travel around Town on roads or along trails but are not comfortable with current conditions, this meeting is your opportunity to have a say on proposed cycling improvements in Halton Hills. Town Staff and members of the study team will be present at the Public Information Centre to answer your questions and discuss the information presented. The event will be an "Open House" format so residents may drop-in anytime over the course of the event.
