Marian and Alvin Weisbrot recently cut their cake, celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary at their Acton home. Marian had kept the original top from their wedding cake frozen for 50 years, and had a base layer made for it to celebrate their golden anniversary. Wedding cake (and couple) survived 11 moves, icing-licking kids to age perfectly-- 50 years By TED BROWN Staff Writer Back in June 1960, like any other typical young couple, Alvin and Marian Weisbrot were married in Winnipeg Manitoba. They enjoyed their typical wedding, with all the trimmings, including a traditional wedding cake. Alvin, being employed by the Woolworths company, and later Woolco, was required to move around quite a bit. As a result, the couple lived in cities all over Canada, including Calgary, Victoria, Burnaby, Vancouver, Edmonton, Lethbridge, Windsor, Agincourt, back to Calgary, Mississauga, and eventually, they settled in Acton to enjoy their retirement. And during that time, they also raised four children-- two girls and two boys. Now moving around with four kids can be a challenge at best, making sure all those important family heirlooms don't get lost or destroyed in the moving. But when the couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary earlier this month, Marian had a surprise for everyone. She still had the top off the original wedding cake, which she displayed at their family party. "She took it over to Sobeys," said Alvin, "And had the people in the bakery make a bottom for the cake. The girl there made a bottom layer so it looked like the original, with the little pillars and all-- it looked pretty good." Marian had kept the top of the cake in the freezer all those years, lovingly protected from the kids, and from being destroyed during those numerous moves all over Canada. Alvin said he thinks one of their boys did "swipe a bit of icing at one time, but otherwise, it was in pretty good shape." "She kept the top of the cake, her wedding dress, and her wedding gloves," said Alvin. "She was even able to wear her wedding dress the day of our anniversary-- not too bad for 50 years after the fact." Three of the Weisbrots' four children are now living in Georgetown, and one is still in Calgary. "The last time we moved away from Calgary, she decided she wasn't coming along," said Alvin, "So she's still out there, with her family." For their 50th anniversary, the Weisbrots' kids gave their parents a trip to Las Vegas, followed by a cruise. When asked about the fate of the top of the original wedding cake after the 50th party, Alvin was quite frank. "Oh, she's still got it, somewhere," he said, matter-of-factly, "She would never get rid of it. She'll probably have it buried with her."
