22 Independent & Free Press,Thursday, July 22, 2010 Georgetown Bread Basket running short on some items Georgetown Bread Basket (food bank) is running short on a few items--canned meat, canned milk, canned pasta, canned tomatoes, canned juice, flour, jams and spreads, powdered milk, rice, sugar and large soups. Thanks for your help. Any items can be placed in the food bank bins at Food Basics, Metro (north and south) and Real Canadian Superstore and food bank volunteers will pick up. Should you have a garden and are willing to share, your fresh food donations are also welcome at the food bank location, Unit 12, 55 Sinclair Ave. Acton Seniors Centre gets a paint job By JULIE CONROY Acton Seniors Centre I hope everyone managed to stay cool over the hot weather. Don't forget that the Centre is air-conditioned and is a cooling centre for anyone who finds the heat too much. The library is also a cooling centre and might be a closer spot for some people. I must say the hot weather doesn't seem to be affecting the beautiful hanging baskets and flowers downtown. It certainly looks beautiful, thanks to Josey Bonnette (BIA manager) and her assistant. Recently, the Acton Arena and Community Centre has had various renovations made to the outside and inside. Now, it's our turn. The Centre is going to be painted this week, so we should have a lovely fresh look when you come in next week. The staff will be moving some things around and painting during the evenings, so please be patient if something isn't in its usual place. It will all be worth it in the end. Our lovely new bulletin board arrived last week, so now all future Centre events will be posted on it. Wendy and Michelle will be posting all information, including which movie will be shown the following week, so keep an eye on the board. Due to circumstances beyond our control (Wendy was sick), the movie, Julie and Julia, was not shown. We have purchased a DVD player so can show the latest available movies. Hopefully the movies will run as planned for the rest of the summer now we have a back-up plan. During the Bid Euchre game last Thursday afternoon there were three mooners: Elma Braida, Muriel Dzierla and Ruth Burke. If you would be interested in learning to play bid euchre, the group would be happy to teach you. Our co-ordinator, Wendy Krever, is busy planning events for the Acton Seniors Centre's Open House running from Monday, Sept. 13 to Friday, Sept. 17. Hopefully there will be something that interests you. I know the Birthday Tea will be on the Tuesday and this will celebrate the birthdays of all members who were born in either July or August. We are hoping for a return visit from Adrian Alder, the paramedic with Halton Region as everyone who attended the last one said how his presentation was so interesting and informative. Also happening during Open House week is a tai chi and sitting yoga session. You can either watch or participate. There will be a "try it" bone builder exercise class that week as well. Of course, Real and his committee are busy planning the Sept. dinner on Wednesday, Sept. 15. The following week (Wednesday, Sept. 22), we will be inviting Georgetown Seniors to join at Blue Springs Golf Course for Golf and Lunch. This will be the third time. Everyone said they couldn't wait until the next game. The signup sheet is now up and I know the tickets will go fast.
