Last month, the federal government eliminated the mandatory long form census related to the upcoming 2011 Census through an Order in Council, without public consultation. A voluntary form will be used in its stead and an extra $30 million will be spent to promote its use. At its July council meeting, Halton Hills council unanimously voted to urge the government to reverse this decree. "The information gathered by the long-form census is used by planners, researchers and it forms the basis of some of the federal (money) transfers that municipalities and provinces get," said Wards 1&2 Regional Councillor Clark Somerville, who brought forward the motion. Among those expressing concern over the government decision include the Canadian Medical Association, Canadian Chamber of Commerce, and the Canadian Federation of Independent Businesses. The long-form questionnaire, which is sent to one-fifth of Canadian households during a Census-taking, asks questions on such issues as work, education, housing, income, child care, migration, ethnicity and family life.
