4 Independent & Free Press, Tuesday,August 10, 2010 Hale Drive selected as site for paving experiment By CYNTHIA GAMBLE Staff Writer The Town will experiment with a unique product on Hale Dr. to see if a temporary fix will alleviate the deteriorating road condition. Infrastructure Services will use a polymer modified slurry sealer called a metro-mat, combined with a geotextile membrane, to create a smooth layer on the street in central Georgetown. It's hoped it will extend its life until 2015 when it will be resurfaced under the Pavement Management Program. Town Engineer Chris Mills said he's been impressed with the product that has been used extensively in northern United States. The issue came to the forefront after Hale Dr. resident Gary Crosbie presented a 25-household petition, urging immediate resurfacing of the street, to council at the June meeting. The residents say the road had not been re-surfaced for more than 45 years and is now crumbling with large cracks and potholes. However, the Town is reluctant to move the street forward in the Pavement Management schedule as Halton Region often replaces water and sewer systems at the same time. Reconstruction of Hale Dr. is estimated at $450,000. Instead Mills suggested the metro-mat alternative to residents at a neighbourhood meeting last month. Attending the July council meeting, senior Sheila Ward, said the residents supported the temporary fix proposed by Mills. "We are all very concerned about the state of the road," Ward told councillors. "I am a cyclist and a walker and I find it quite hazardous outside my house." "It's a product that is promising... and we think it will do the trick and tide them over for five years until the road can be reconstructed," said Ward 3 Councillor Moya Johnson, who urged council to support the initiative. It will cost the Town, $25,000, to place the geotextile surface treatment and metro-mat product on Hale Dr. If the experiment is successful (can it stand up to snow plows for instance), the same treatment will be applied, for $39,000, next year to the remaining 2015 Pavement Management streets: Terry Ct., Gibbons Place, Stockman Cres., Lucinda Place, Crombie Place, Heslop Crt., Sargent Rd (from Rexway to end) and Allen Rd.
