The Ministry of Transportation (MTO), over the past couple of years, has been undertaking a GTA (Greater Toronto Area) Corridor study to better move traffic throughout the GTA. They are down to two alternatives. One, 4-2, is a north-south connection to the 401-407 corridors. The second alternative, 4-3, will be an eight-lane highway from Brampton to Milton cutting a swath from 10 Sideroad connecting to Tremaine Rd. in Milton. This alternative is not an alternative at all. It will be devastating to the future of Halton Hills. This will totally fragment the agriculture land and will truly undermine the rural character of Halton Hills. This will add more pressure to urbanize the rural area. This is not a long-term vision of Halton Hills. We envision a buffer between Georgetown and Milton. We see enhanced 401/407 employment lands (Steeles Ave.) and rural lands separating Milton and Georgetown as a buffer. On behalf of council, I have written Transportation Minister Kathleen Wynne and expressed the Town's opposition to Alternative 4-3. If you feel as strongly as your council and I do on this issue, I encourage you to please email your thoughts to www. gta-west.com and let their alternatives be real. ··· At our last meeting, council approved $40,000 for a Functional Servicing Study with respect to the location of any new arena which may be built on the Moldmasters SportsPlex site, Gellert Community Centre site and the Acton Arena site. This study is not just to pick the best lo- Alternative 4-3 is no alternative Rick Bonnette cation, but it will give council a detailed work plan and costing for "preparing the sites for actual construction of the arenas themselves. The study will look at layout, grading, drainage issues, possibly morning tennis and soccer fields etc." The priority is to build two new pads in Georgetown and, down the road, twin the Acton arena. Bottom line, we are doing our homework as we try to resolve the arena shortage in Halton Hills. ··· Kudos to Josey Bonnette, Terry Foster, Nichol Spence, Councillor Jon Hurst and the many volunteers for putting on an excellent Leathertown Festival. ··· Congratulations Northside Autosports located on Trafalgar Road, on their grand opening. Congratulations to Scotia Bank on their 100th anniversary in Acton. ··· Keeping it real! Surveyors from Accreditation Canada recently spent four days meeting with HHS staff, physicians, volunteers, board members, community partners and patients to determine if HHS met the high standards for accreditation. The standards examine all aspects of health care. HHS met 97 per cent of Accreditation Canada's criteria. HHS said they have already started to address the areas noted as requiring further attention in the final accreditation report, which include space and overcrowding, medication practices and the implementation of the ethics framework. The surveyors also recognized HHS for three leading practices: safe elder care, positive patient identification and caring rounds. SPECIAL NIGHT! 10 O'CLOCK START!
