Town finishes fourth overall in Power Pledge Challenge Halton Hills has nabbed fourth place among 90 communities participating in a province-wide energy conservation challenge. The Power Pledge Challenge asked communities to show a commitment to the environment by reducing the amount of energy they use. Participants signed a Power Pledge, which promised they would take simple conservation actions to help save energy. For example, participants could pledge to unplug electronic devices when they're not in use, buy energy efficient lighting or set thermostats to 2C warmer in the summer and 2C cooler in the winter. Participating communities also pledged to reduce their overall energy usage for 12 hours during a Community Challenge Day. The challenge took place Wednesday (August 11) and Halton Hills placed 17th out of 90 communities with 860 pledges signed. Halton Hills reduced its energy use by 1.9 per cent. The results were based on the highest number of Power Pledges per capita. Within its population category, the Town ranked third. In 2009, Halton Hills ranked ninth. Nearly 1,400 Halton Hills participants took The Power Pledge. Across Halton there were 7,045 participants, representing 1.6 per cent of the population. The Ontario Power Authority presented an award to Halton for having the most pledges from the participating regions. The runner-ups were Waterloo and Niagara regions. If all the power pledges of Halton Hills residents are fulfilled more than 2.7 million kilowatt hours of energy will be saved each year, more than $605,000 worth of energy costs will be saved annually; and approximately 283,000 kilograms of annual greenhouse gas emissions will be avoided. "Congratulations to all of the businesses and residents who took the Power Pledge Challenge," said Mayor Rick Bonnette. "To place fourth out of 90 communities is wonderful and definitely shows our Town's commitment to the environment." To make the Community Challenge a success, the Town (Office of Sustainability) partnered with Halton Hills Hydro, Halton Hills Chamber of Commerce and Practically Green Solutions to raise awareness of energy conservation and sustainability. Sioux Lookout was the top participating community, winning $10,000 toward a renewable energy project. Power Pledges will be accepted until August 31 and participants will earn 20 Air Miles reward miles and an additional 10 reward miles to one of three designated charities for registering.
