12 Independent & Free Press, Tuesday,August 24, 2010 At Halton Place Country Classic show gets underway tomorrow The FEI World Cup Qualifier may have been canceled, but there will still be plenty of horse power during Halton Place's annual three-week Canadian Country Classic, which gets started tomorrow (Wednesday). Rider conflicts with other high-stakes events recently forced organizers to scrap the World Cup Qualifier, which normally highlights week two of the late-summer showcase. In its place now will be the SwissCan $40,000 Grand Prix, which is slated for Sunday, Sept. 5 at 2 p.m. The balance of the three-week schedule remains intact, and many of the hunter and jumper divisions will benefit from the FEI section's cancellation, since a generous portion of the prize money initially allocated to these classes will be distributed amongst the hunter/jumper divisions. The second annual Equi-Challenge, will be held Thursday, August 26, to benefit the Ontario Veterinary College's new Equine Sports Medicine and Reproduction Centre at the University of Guelph. A unique, team-style "competition", Equi-Challenge features high profile riders from across all equine disciplines "changing hats" for a great cause. The event will feature show jumpers barrel racing, jockeys show jumping and rodeo riders playing polo. A $5,000 Open Welcome will kick off this week's competition Friday, Aug. 27, while week one will be closed out with the Villarboit $40,000 Grand Prix Sunday, Aug. 29 at 2 p.m. The third and final week will feature a $20,000 Modified Grand Prix Saturday, Sept. 11 and a $10,000 Villarboit Hunter Classic Sunday, Sept. 12. Both begin at 2 p.m. Vendors and food concessions will be on hand throughout the event, while ringside seating is available. Admission is free Wednesday thru Friday each week, with weekend admission $10 per car including all occupants and parking. A Team Charity Challenge Saturday, Sept. 4 and a fashion show and luncheon Sunday, Sept. 12 will support local and equine-related charities. Proceeds from a new hospitality area will go to Georgetown Hospital. Halton Place is located on No. 15 Sideroad, on the Milton/Halton Hills border. Canadian show jumping team rider Erynn Ballard moved her talented mount `Sorbette' up to the Canadian World Cup League at Halton Place in 2009. While scheduling conflicts forced the cancellation of the World Cup Qualifier there will still be plenty of firstrate equestrian action at Halton Place during its three-week Canadian Country Classic which gets underway tomorrow.
