14 Independent & Free Press,Thursday, September 9, 2010 Two railway crossings to have gates installed By CYNTHIA GAMBLE Staff Writer CN has notified the Town that workers will be installing barrier gates at level rail crossings on 10 Sideroad (between Third Line and Hwy. 25) and Fourth Line (between 10 and 15 Sideroads) this fall. Currently both crossings have signals only. In a study done in 2006, when the Town initially requested CN do the work, 30 trains travelled along the rail line and more than a thousand cars crossed the tracks daily. The Town will contribute about $75,000 to the project. A barrier arm systems costs about $250,000 each. Wards 1&2 Regional Councillor Clark Somerville requested at Town staff update the 2006 study information, especially looking at the Eastern Ave. crossing in Acton. He noted that with the increased population and more shopping available in the community, Eastern Ave. is getting more traffic. Infrastructure Services Director Chris Mills said he would direct his staff to update the vehicle and train counts on all the crossings within the town, "as part of our discussions with the rail companies". As well, Wards 3&4 Regional Councillor Jane Fogal notified her colleagues that she requested Halton Region staff investigate the status of their previous request that CN look at a barrier arm system on the rail line on Trafalgar Rd. at Lindsay Ct.
